Primary School Banner

Every morning on the way into work I pass a Primary School. It's central to rather a large town, if that helps contextually.
A few weeks ago I saw an 8ft banner lashed to the railings by the main entrance, on the road, with a picture of a woman passed out in a sofa and the slogan 'Stay sober while they're in your care! A child could die if you can't look after them' (roughly, can't recall word for word, I was driving)

It's been on my mind a bit since, AIBU to not have realised how bad things are that primary schools have taken to these measures! Am I living in a bloody bubble? Shock

Has anyone else seen this?

I've never seen a banner like this. It does sound rather shocking. If I was a parent at that school I'd be a bit insulted by the inference. Maybe there's a problem with drunkenness in that area?😮

Stressedout10 · 30/06/2019 09:53

My question would be why it's an image of a woman and not a man or both parents?
Is it ok for a man to be drunk in charge of children?
Or is it only women who are dumb enough to need to be taught this.🤬

Nanny0gg · 30/06/2019 10:11

What @Stressedout10 said.

And if there's a problem with a small number of parents, take it up with them.

Haworthia · 30/06/2019 10:15

I’d be interested to know whether the school produced the banner themselves (seems unlikely) or whether it forms part of a wider campaign that the school are supporting (seems fairly unlikely too).

There are better ways to safeguard children from pissed parents than a scaremongering and sexist banner tied to the railings.

Very odd.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 10:16

I cant believe they would have such a racist banner

Justajot · 30/06/2019 10:21

@araiwa what's the racist bit? I think I've missed something.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 10:24

Well its sexist because its a woman.

If shes white then its racist against white people. If shes asian its racist against asians. Other races can get drunk too

ChesterDrawsDoesntExist · 30/06/2019 10:30

Firstly, yes yes yes to what @Stressedout10 said.

Now as to the need for the poster? It's very possible that it's just a campaign they've jumped on or it could be a real issue. We live in a small village which is lovely, however, like any other place we have our usual Jeremy Kyle guests. One in particular lives on the next street to the school and even then couldn't be arsed walking her kids to the nursery. We'd catch a glimpse of her in her pjs and a can of whatever in her hand and the children as young as three would take themselves to nursery. They were too small to open the door so they'd walk in with whoever was bringing their own child in. It actually took a while for anyone to notice because not all parents walked their kids through from the changing room so an unaccompanied child wasn't unusual.

Years later the kids are in high school and they're, as you would expect, tearaways. Mum can still be seen on FB at 10am saying it's one of those days and she deserves a cider. "Time to get one cracked open".

People like that wouldn't have cared a jot about a random poster so what's the point?

OldUnit · 30/06/2019 11:15

I'll try to capture a photo of it this week to add here if I can.

Yes, a white woman.

The sex and race of the model didn't strike me as the weirdest thing about this tbh, until I posted here. Yes, It is a predominately white area, North West, coastal, and the majority of parents and children school will be, but not entirely.

Irrespective of the image they chose to portray on the banner, I found the necessity quite shocking.

I'll look closer but it did look like part of a campaign type material.

Thinking on it, there are adverts on the back of busses in the town encouraging women to stay sober in pregnancy, be the 'Baby's Hero'.
Women and men in superhero capes.

It must be a huge problem in the area. Scary.

IvanaPee · 30/06/2019 11:26

Random and sexist, yes.

But racist? Ffs!

Jinglejanglefish · 30/06/2019 11:26

araiwa

That's not what racism means.

Anyway, I would assume it's a campaign by the local authority which the school is supporting. Seems unlikely it is that big of an issue though. At least I hope not.

LittleDoritt · 30/06/2019 11:31

We have a mother similar to the one mentioned by a PP. She staggers to the school gate at 3pm absolutely reeking of alcohol. I seriously doubt she would even be able to see straight to read the poster, let alone act on its message.

Topseyt · 30/06/2019 11:35

It isn't racist. It IS sexist.

sincethereis · 30/06/2019 11:48

it isn’t sexist. Jesus.

if it had been a man, would it have been sexist ?
if it had been a black person, would it have been racist?

Ridiculous.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 12:00

Why is it sexist but not racist

Why a white woman? Why not a black man?

ranibowsprimkle · 30/06/2019 12:15

Tbh I would imagine it's a woman on the poster in part because mother's tend to be the primary carers and also because of the 'wine mum' culture that's quite prevalent on here.

Pud2 · 30/06/2019 12:24

For goodness sake! The point is, is it appropriate to have this displayed at the front of a school? You can’t have a representation of every gender, race and creed on a single banner. It would be rather crowded!

My understanding is that racialism is when a derogatory comment is made about somebody in relation to their race. This is not the case here.

MyOpinionIsValid · 30/06/2019 12:28

sarcasm< Perhaps it was a transgenedered male to female - but lets not bother to focus on the FACT that WOMEN are the primary care givers and SOME children live in dreadfully abusive homeswhere alcohol is a factor. I would imagine these days there is less of a problem with Dad coming home wankered on a Friday night after a skinful than there is with YummyMummy tipping crate loads of Aldi own brand prosecco down her throat from the time she wanders in from the school run to the time she staggers off to bed. The wine culture in this forum alone is staggering.

The generic comfort gestures on this forum are Cake and Wine so fat and pissed is the way to go if you have a problem. Hmm

Don't you worry OP, so long as everyone is bitterly crying into their gin about the WOMAN on the poster rather that n the message the poster actually gives and as usual miss the point entirely, all the little kidlets will be fine.

Bus in seriousness, the rise of women drinking, and drinking alone, drinking at home, needing an excuse to unwind after a hard day whatevering, and it never stops at one.

Jinglejanglefish · 30/06/2019 13:11

"Why a white woman? Why not a black man?*

Why not an Indian woman? Why not a Chinese man? Why not a mixed race transwoman?

That's not what racism is.

It is likely a white woman as that is representative of the majority of primary care givers in that particular area.

NewName54321 · 30/06/2019 13:35

Are you asking whether things have got so bad that schools need to be putting in posters telling people how to parent, or have things got so bad that schools are going down the route of selling advertising space in order to boost their budgets?
