She was purposely pedantic?

My boyfriend and I went to a local-ish supermarket early yesterday evening for some bits and bobs and I decided to pick up a sugar free energy drink since they were cheaper than the same ones in the corner shop at the bottom of my street.

We finally got to the check out after getting everything we needed, the cashier then asked me for some ID (I've never had this happen before!) and went on to say it was part of the Challenge 25 programme after my boyfriend politely asked her why she wanted to see my ID when I was obviously not a teenager under the age of 16 attempting to buy an energy drink.

FYI: I'm 25 and look my age. No baby face, no nothing.

When worked in the supermarket the til prompted the cashier when you scanned age restricted items. I imagine her til asked her to confirm that the customer was over 25.

When I worked...

She was following the rules.

LauderSyme · 30/06/2019 01:32

I don't suppose it was personal to you, the retailer probably has a strict policy as standard. Either that or she has misunderstood the policy and was being over-cautious.

cheeseislife8 · 30/06/2019 01:42

Nah, don't give it a second thought. It's part of the job to check anyone who may be under 25

slashlover · 30/06/2019 01:43

If you look under 25 then you're going to get IDed for an age related product, lottery is 16 but follows Challenge 25.

Greensleeves · 30/06/2019 01:43

She probably has a supervisor breathing down her neck, spot checking etc, and doesn't want to lose her job. She probably hates it as much as you do.

NiandraLaDes · 30/06/2019 02:25

I have no doubt that she hated having to ask you as much as you clearly hated being asked. But it's not a big deal, is it? Surely you just produced your ID and went about with your life? She did her job, you bought your energy drink, and then you both went merrily on your way?

Feelingsad19 · 30/06/2019 02:40

Ok I’ll be the first to say it.

I’m 72 and got ID’d for a bottle of champagne yesterday.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 30/06/2019 02:41

Energy drinks are now age restricted. I'm sure it was in all the papers and stuff. She won't have had any choice.

Iliterallycantthinkofanythingq · 30/06/2019 03:04

Just following the rules

GPatz · 30/06/2019 03:07

I bet your boyfriend 'politely' asked. Was it more sarcasm or patronising?

DrinkTaboo · 30/06/2019 03:07

I know it's silly OP, more so when most 16 year olds won't even have ID but she could have had someone watching so thought she better ask, better then getting sacked.

I still get asked for ID, I just smile and take it as a compliment. Smile

MeerKitty · 30/06/2019 03:26

The Challenge 25 programme means that if you look under 25, then you should be asked for ID. It’s not unreasonable for the cashier to ask you for ID.
