To be worried about coil insertion?

Due to get a coil fitted next week. Fed up of the pill and hate hormones so opted for the copper coil. Ive heard horror stories and considering cancelling Blush

I had a Mirena fitted a few days ago. I won't lie and say it was pleasant but take a couple of painkillers beforehand. I promise, it's over so quickly and the benefits are so worth it. It just feels like a more invasive smear test is that makes any sense. Good luck!

AnonymousP · 29/06/2019 21:19

It will fine! Don’t panic. The more relaxed you are the better, too. Have you had any babies?

EtonM3ss · 29/06/2019 21:20

yes ive had a baby vaginal birth will that make it easier?

I didn't enjoy mine (obviously!) but it was over quickly and as someone else has said, very much like a more involved smear with one point of a hot pinchy pain.

Get a hot water bottle for after as I had some cramping (or maybe just good painkillers in this heat). I've had it for 3 years and it is worth every second of the insertion - good luck!

chaoscategorised · 29/06/2019 21:24

Oh, and I've never had a baby! So hopefully that'll make it easier for you :-)

EtonM3ss · 29/06/2019 21:24

How big is it?!?

OP posts:
BettyJune07 · 29/06/2019 21:27

Its tiny! They'll show you it before hand. Its uncomfortable, and I had bad stomach pain for a couple of days afterward. But it's all done within about 20minutes. Smile

ToPlanZ · 29/06/2019 21:28

I've got one too next week and I'm not looking forward to it at all. It will be number 4 and honestly they've all hurt a lot. Each one has been progressively worse. However another 5 years of no periods (mirena coil) is hard to resist, although I have really agonized over putting myself through this again. In the USA they numb the cervix with Lidocaine before they clamp it, but not on the NHS I'm afraid.

The last doctor who fitted one for me did tell me that the further you get from childbirth the worst the insertion gets and that does seem to tie in with my experience . It's over 20 years for me now since DS.

Once in though I have found them great, so good luck and take painkillers half an hour before the insertion and remember everyone perceives pain differently and you might find it a breeze.

sashypants · 29/06/2019 21:30

Sorry to jump in OP but those that have had it fitted do you have to check for strings? I was told you do but I'm not sure if it was the copper one or the other one.
I dont think I could bring myself to check
Also has your DP ever been able to feel it? Agin I've heard people say their DP has been cut from it

And lastly, is there genuinely no symptoms from it?

EtonM3ss · 29/06/2019 21:32

im only 18 months from giving birth so maybe ill be okBlush

I'd had a baby (vaginal birth) and I didn't find coil insertion that painful or difficult. My friends who hadn't had children had a much worse time, I noticed I think you'll be fine. The clinic where I had mine done told me too late because I was already in there -- that you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol 45 minutes beforehand just in case.

YesQueen · 29/06/2019 21:34

@sashypants yes I check the strings, nope to feeling it and mine is copper so no side effects Smile

I have had the mirena fitted twice (abroad)..once during my c section and the second time under GA as they couldn’t insert it in the doctors rooms...I didn’t feel a thing either time!

WonderTweek · 29/06/2019 21:36

I had mine fitted two years ago and while it wasn't exactly pleasant, it wasn't as bad as I expected. It only took a minute and a nice nurse was chatting to me and asking about my new baby and in the end I got so involved in rambling on about my beautiful newborn that I forgot what was going on. Grin I had minor cramps for a few hours afterwards but that was it. I've been really happy with it and I'm glad I stuck with it despite some random spotting in the beginning as I've been period free for almost two years and don't get the horrible PMS anymore. You'll be fine!

meow1989 · 29/06/2019 21:38

I've had 4 copper coils since I was 16. The most recent, post c section, was actually the most painful but they said it's easier for women who have had vaginal births.

Its's certainly not pleasant but it's a short lived really bad cramp type feeling and once it's in you're done for 5-10 years unless you want to try for a pregnancy.

Montsti · 29/06/2019 21:38

Forgot to say that I’ve had 4 c sections and no natural births so my cervix wasn’t ideal for it to be put in...

hopelesslyromantic93 · 29/06/2019 21:40

I'll be honest- I had a kyleena coil fitted 3 months after I had my dd and it was really painful. But this was due to the dr having difficulty fitting it as apparently the neck of my womb is really small?! Lol. It took quite long time and I had a lot of cramping afterwards and felt quite sick. Don't stress about it but just be prepared for it to hurt a bit!

sashypants · 29/06/2019 21:42

I had a vaginal birth 5 year ago but c section 10m ago so potentially could be quite horrendous for me then?
I think I'm going to phone the Sexual health clinic and get an appointment once my Injection comes close to running out!
Thank you for helping me decide

bellsbuss · 29/06/2019 21:44

Every time I think about having one my foo foo clenches up Blush

Fl0w3r · 29/06/2019 21:45

Not read all the posts but I had my copper coil fitted around 3 years ago. It was painful so take some pain killers before you go in but it's over in seconds. There's cramping a few days after so consider taking some days off work.

Despite all that I've had it for 3 years and was the best choice! I don't know it's there and I have had permanent contraception.

Worth it for the years of contraception x

MushroomTree · 29/06/2019 21:47

I had one fitted yesterday. I'm two years postpartum. I can't say it was my idea of fun but it was bearable. I've had period pain like cramps since but I'm coming to the end of my period anyway so it's nothing usually or anything I can't cope with.

I was really nervous too as I'd had one pre baby and fitting it was the most painful thing I'd ever experienced. This was far less painful. And far less painful than giving birth so I know which one I'd rather do!

Take painkillers about half an hour before and then keep them topped up. You'll be fine SmileFlowers

AntiBotics · 29/06/2019 22:02

I had a mirena coil fitted recently for the first time. I haven’t had children.
I found the pain was very intense, I felt quite sick and faint afterwards and had to wait about half an hour before leaving as I just wasn’t right. I went back to work thinking it wouldn’t be worse than a smear but had to go home early. I had bad cramps for a week. I would say they lasted up to a month.
Bonus is my period has stopped.

I took paracetamol beforehand. Then I ended up taking paracetamol and ibuprofen at spaced out intervals to help.

Littlebelina · 29/06/2019 22:13

Mine wasn't as bad as my smear (had them two weeks apart). Was about 4 months post partum but only had sections. Took ibuprofen before hand

fifig87 · 29/06/2019 22:19

I had a new one put in recently. Havent had vaginal births, it wasnt the most pleasant thing ever!
We thought I would have to go back again another day to try it but my gp managed to get it in. She had explained it is harder if you have had non vaginal births.
Best thing since sliced pan in my opinion so worth the slight bit of uncomfort

Baritriwsahys · 29/06/2019 22:22

I was chatting to the doc when she did mine, felt her poking about and then she said she was done. I thought she was still eyeing up the cervix Grinfew cramps and a wee bleed that day and then fine after that.
