AIBU to not let them outside in the heat (35°)

So today where I am it was realllly hot. Myself and my partner decided to keep our DC in the house in the cool for most of the day. They went out this morning and after dinner when the garden was partly in shade, but I limited the amount of direct sun. I have seen a lot of photos of kids out in direct sun in paddling pools etc, so I am wondering if I was being a bit unreasonable to keep them in? I know tomorrow is going to be a lot cooler and they’ll be outside most of the day.

Only mad dogs and Englishman go out in the midday sun.

Lalalalalalalalaland · 29/06/2019 22:08

We went and sorted the pony at 8.30am and i went back up at 7.

The rest of the day the kids were in and out of the house and pool.

I found they all retreated in around lunchtime as it was too hot for them.

But plenty of water, sun cream and a nice cool pool to splash around in and they were fine

YANBU, mine (9,8,6,4,1.5) were out at about 10am but were in from just after 12 until 3:30. Then they were out again until 6:45, apart from a quick dinner. The little one had a nap & the 6 & 4 yo benefitted from having some down time in the cool as they were starting to get a bit ratty.

Yika · 29/06/2019 22:19

YANBU, I wouldn't send children outdoors in this heat. We had a outdoor day planned with friends but decided (with the friends) to go to a museum instead, so that we could be out of the sun and in an air conditioned building. Afterwards we went to the woods for a picnic in full shade from 5-7 pm. Still sweltering! Did not venture into the sun until we got home at 7:30.

Burpsandrustles · 29/06/2019 22:42

Mine mostly inside except when running to sprinkler in garden.

user1493413286 · 29/06/2019 22:43

I kept DD2 out of the sun until about 5 (we were busy in the morning) as it was just too hot and she burns too easily.

Beanbag12 · 29/06/2019 22:51

I agree they’re fine usually in the summer heat, always wear hats, suncream, plenty of drinks etc.
Definitely each to their own, for me it’s not worth going out in 35° with young kids in the middle of the day if it can be avoided. Mad dogs and English men and all that.

We go to southern France for 3 weeks every summer where it is usually 35 degrees and hotter in the day. I always say to the DC, what would we do in France? And that is enough to keep them in the shade. They know that properly hot weather needs treating with respect. They are 9 and 13

Beanbag12 · 29/06/2019 22:54

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints oh god, yeah, I know what you mean about the rattyness in hot youngsters. It makes me a bit like that too!

I have a 35 degree setting on my electric heater. I sleep with that setting on. It’ll be fine? Just drink a ton of water before, during and after if you think you can’t handle it

Beanbag12 · 29/06/2019 23:04

@Squirrelthingsaway woah, you just be roasting! Our heating is only on 20° in the winter. No, it was really unbearable heat to be out in. I’m sure we would have been ‘fine’ but it’s going to be a much cooler day tomorrow so they can have an active day outside without me worrying about them getting too much sun.

My kids naturally stay in during the hottest part of the day and tend to be out earlier and later when it's less intense. Win, win. They get the benefits of going out with reduced risk of sunburn and over-heating.

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/06/2019 23:05

Yanbu. Surprised so many people let their kids out in the sun between 11 and 3 when the advice is to seek shade.

Beanbag12 · 29/06/2019 23:07

@Yika sounds perfect! Someone said upthread that they took their DC to a softplay on a day like today, can’t think of anything worse, they’re not air conditioned here 😱

YANBU

My son and I spend a lot of time outside usually, it's where we're happiest but we stayed in for a large part of the day. He's three. We rigged up a tarp in the garden for shade and did go out later in the afternoon

Beanbag12 · 29/06/2019 23:21

@Lemonlady22 @Carpetburns @dontfollowmeimlosttoo Jesus, how much hotter would it have been in a plastic bubble today. Totally impractical.

It’s what you feel comfortable with doing. People have different tolerances

DD (4) and cousin (2.5) were out from around 12:30 till 3 but having the paddling pool, which they spent 90% of the time in, made it bearable. They had cream on, hats and t shirt type swim suits. I had a sarong over my back and chest to avoid strap marks, it fell off and I didn’t realise and I ended up a bit red but it’s gone down now.

Without the pool it would’ve been too intense but DD and I love being outdoors all day and she’s better for it.

notangelinajolie · 29/06/2019 23:23

Cotton wool?

CanYouHelpFindThis · 29/06/2019 23:25

I think you were right. I would do the same

Its not going to be this hot (35) the whole of the summer...

Going out early and late when the sun isnt hot / lots of shade is the way forward i think

Justwanttotravel · 29/06/2019 23:26

You are a brilliant mummy, all of those children out in the hot sun, oh dear, their mummies aren’t as caring as you are they? There you go, that’s what you wanted to hear isn’t it? 🙄

HellYeah90s · 29/06/2019 23:48

I use to be like that OP, until we moved to Aus so the kids have had to get use to the hot weather.

TBH I let them free range for most of the day, That said in the weekends I try to keep them in for an hour at least over lunch to give them a break. I check on them and make sure they don't look like they are going to pass out or a bit peaky and ensure they drink regular water etc, however mine are older enough to know when they know they are starting to overheat.

Its hard because we are all fair skinned, I must have spent a fortune on sun screen.

Micsam89 · 30/06/2019 01:27

You know your kids better than anyone else. Some feel the heat more than others. But some of you would struggle in Australia, where 35 in summer is pretty standard for us. If we all stayed indoors during those temps, there would be no one outside all summer! We have some places reaching 46 for multiple days in a row. But when I was on a working holiday in England, I was still in my winter gear when there was a 'heatwave' and everyone was sun baking in the parks!

Fatasfooook · 30/06/2019 01:29

Pretty sure there’s a good deal on amazon right now on bubble wrap. You might want to take advantage
