Cyclist on pavement

Dh and I were out walking the dogs this morning. Both dogs were on a short leash. I was closest to the walls and fences of peoples gardens and DH was next to me then there was a grass verge which was as wide as the pavement.

We could see a cyclist on the pavement approaching us, neither of us moved thinking that the cyclist would go onto the grass and around us.

But no the cyclist deliberately rode straight at me expecting me to move out of the way. We then ended up face to face. Both DH and I spoke at the same time, me saying you should be riding on the road not the pavement and DH pointing out the cycle path on the other side of the road.

The cyclist just pulled a so what face and made it obvious they were not going to move out of the way. I noticed the cyclist was wearing a works tshirt of a local care company so I lifted my phone (only had it because I've been playing the new Harry Potter game, yes I'm a nerd Grin ) and went to take their picture.

They then went around us saying Fuck off

Now my question is AIBU to report them to their company? Normally I wouldn't bother but this person is a carer and is in and out of vulnerable peoples homes. If they were like that with me and my DH out on a public street what are they like behind the closed doors of people they are supposed to look after.

He was in the wrong but I have no idea why you would even consider taking his photo of him. And reporting him to his company? WTF? So they can what, sack him?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 30/06/2019 00:24

If the roads are too dangerous for cyclists that doesn't give them the right to cycle on footpaths endangering pedestrians who have nowhere else to go.

He was in the wrong, so should have been the one giving way, graciously.

I wouldn't report him, what would be the point? I'd just think myself unlucky to have come up against a particularly arrogant cyclist and get on with my day.

Stop referring to them as cyclists. There is no such thing. They do have cars as well and walk to and from their bikes.

Why? If they are riding a bike they are a cyclist, if they are walking they're a pedestrian and if they are driving a car they are a driver.

I know several people who have bicycles which they use for all journeys apart from the occasional train or coach, and who have not got cars.

Darkcloudsandsunnydays · 30/06/2019 18:36

No.no.no. People are a little more complex. Than whatever bit if machinery they are appended to think of lawn mower woman. I disagree.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/06/2019 22:02

When someone is driving a car they are called a driver. Why should they not be called a cyclist when they are riding a bike, and a rider when they are on a horse, and a pogoist if that happens to be how they are getting about that day?

BeyondMyWits · 01/07/2019 07:46

my space as a middle-aged non-driver is getting smaller and smaller, seems everyone has the right to invade it and make me feel uncomfortable.

Wouldn't surprise me if it becomes a legal right for cyclists to ride on the pavement because THEY don't feel safe on the roads - what happens when I don't feel safe in my space - on the pavement - I have nowhere else to go.

there are parallels in other aspects of life - but it seems it is always me who has to give...

I saw a man in his 90s knocked down on saturday because of this. Smashed chin in, so yes please report. I dont give a fuck if some cyclists are nervous about cars. Not our problem.

wombat1a · 01/07/2019 08:03

They shouldn't be on the pavement esp given there was a cycle path. However saying thatI find cycle paths are often more dangerous than being on the roads because of the number of pedestrians who insist on walking 2 a breast on them.

The Q is how hard would it have been for you to tuck in front of your DH and just let them past? Sounds like if both parties had been a bit more willing for some give and take it would have been a non-issue.

BlueSkiesLies · 01/07/2019 08:08

Sure he was a sick, but what do you hope to gain from ‘reporting’ him to his employer?

Revenge? A thrill at getting him fired or in trouble?

Really he was rude to you and inconvenienced you for about 5 seconds. Shit happens. You come across horrible people. Move on.

Snoozysnoozy · 01/07/2019 09:05

So even though the cyclist was breaking the law the OP is BU?

If you are of the opinion that someone is doing something illegal then their employer is not the appropriate person to speak with. Hmm

teyem · 01/07/2019 09:27

It's just plain shit-stirring with none of the accountability of having made the charge with the police.
