Cool Christening gift?

I have a christening coming up and I'm thinking of what to get for a gift. I don't particularly like all the traditional gift ideas of money boxes, Noah's Arks, teaspoons, etc, and don't have a huge budget as it is also the parents' wedding.
WIBU to stray away from the usual gifts (incase they'll end up with lots of the same thing) and get something a bit more modern or quirky, maybe even tying in the parents' wedding, or do people give money these days? I'm going to be giving the parents money for their wedding.
Has anyone given or received a Christening gift that they really loved and was a bit less traditional? I'm not religious so not that familiar with Christening etiquette.
Thank you.

16 years ago, a friend gave a hip flask for my son’s christening, with a note saying not be used until his 18th birthday - which is later this year!

I got a rose bush called Isabella for child of the same name

I'd get a box set of Harry Potter books! Bit different and not something that will be used immediately, but a great keepsake for future!

Pipandmum · 29/06/2019 16:31

A nice book would do. I like the rose bush idea a lot though! Doesn’t have to be the same name...

Mont Blanc pen depending on budget.

CD - Sing the Bible with Slugs and Bugs. It's my go-to Christening gift...

A nice book, wine or whiskey for laying down, a toy ... whatever you like. Unless you are a godparent gifts don't tend to be religious. Another option is a children's bond (assuming they still exist)

Wooden rainbow or a pop up Robert Sabuda book.

Not on The High Street have some great, modern ideas. Someone got my daughter a print that has her details on and comes with some ink pads so everyone present can put their fingerprints on it. However, you need to make sure that the parents are aware of the gift either on the day or just before - we didn't open the gifts until the next day so have been trying to catch everyone who was there ever since!

Is the DC a girl, there's a lovely book 'prayer for a blueberry girl'. (By Neil Gaiman iirc) Haven't found an equally nice boys one yet.

Thanks very much for your tips so far!
I saw an oak tree gift which I rather liked (similar to the rose bush idea). The baby is a bit, sorry I should have said. I'll look through everyone's suggestions properly now...

As christening services are free, we've asked the guests for our dd2s christening to give any money they'd of spent of the gift to the church.

Could that be an idea?

Notverygrownup · 29/06/2019 17:16

I gave my godsons a box full of things from the year they were born - a book, a CD, a newspaper, a photo in a frame and a few other bits, with a letter and a do-not-open until you are 18 sign. It was fun putting it together for me. Forgot to ask them if they opened it!!

A bottle of wine from their birth year can be fun too.

Royal Mint do coin sets for the year of the child's birth, amongst other things:

I’ve bought a name a star before
A piece of the moon
And a laird title for a piece of land in Scotland

We got a lovely framed picture which says
The X family
Then me, dh, DD, ddog, ddog, ddog.

Not sure where it's from but it makes me smile.

A nativity set? Something a bit quirky or perhaps from somewhere reflecting the family's origins (if applicable?)
