To ask about toddlers left in cars?

Just had a bit a ding dong with DH. He was on his way out to shops with our 2 toddlers, I’m still in my nighty doing house hold jobs.

He came back a few minutes later looking for his sunglasses leaving the twins in the car, it was taking him longer than he thought it would to get the sunglasses. So I said to him I’d go and watch them through the front window. Looked through the front window, they’re parked up out of eye shot. I wasn’t dressed to go I shouted at him to go back right now, which he did but he called me abnormal for worrying about it, nothing was going to happen, he says most people would think like him, not me.

He comes from a country where fatalism is very common and as a result he does things like leaving windows open when he goes out and leaving lighters around.

His whole attitude is ‘nothing will happen’. But I’ve known him so long that I know often it does happen and then he cries and says ‘I’m sorry, I’ didn’t think anything would happen’ he never learns though.

Am I right about the car or is he?

You are right.
They were out of sight.
It is very, very hot.

newcupcake · 29/06/2019 14:39

My main thought is the car would be scorching even for a minute or two today

Yeahnahmum · 29/06/2019 14:43

Yanbu. leaving kids in the car out of sight is a big no from me. If it was in front of the house then yeah i would be ok with that (depending on the weather /duratioj of looking for sunglasses )

Yabu however, at not being dressed yet at 2.30 pm Grin

There was a story recently in a “naice” market town where a parent left an 18 month old child in the car for over an hour (she’d been left a ticket). Fire crew had to smash the window. Parent returned with another child. The odd minute or two I can understand but not unless you really have to.

JassyRadlett · 29/06/2019 14:45

Jesus. Either they were at risk because the car was shut up and locked and it’s a hot day, or they were at risk because he left the car unlocked and windows down out of eye contact.

He’s a bloody idiot either way. The risk with the former is much higher - if left too long (and not all that long either) they would definitely die. The potential risk of the latter is less likely but just as potentially catastrophic.

And I’m fairly laid back.

BeanBag7 · 29/06/2019 14:53

I leave 2.5 year old in the (locked) car for 2 minutes if I forget something from the house and pop back to get it. But not in this weather; it's far too hot.

I've had to look up 'fatalism' and I don't really understand what you mean TBH. If everything is preordained, then what ever is going to happen is going to happen and no interventions will stop that.

fatalism
[ˈfeɪt(ə)lɪz(ə)m]

NOUN
the belief that all events are predetermined and therefore inevitable.
"fatalism can breed indifference to the human costs of war"
a submissive attitude to events, resulting from a fatalistic attitude.
"he experienced a sense of fatalism that kept his fear at bay"
synonyms:
passive acceptance · resignation · acceptance · acceptance of the inevitable · stoicism · defeatism · pessimism · negativism · negative thinking · gloominess · doom and gloom · gloom · predeterminism · predestinarianism · necessitarianism · fate · fatedness

NoSauce · 29/06/2019 14:59

We’re the windows down? The heat is more worrying than them being out of sight. Why was he dragging two dc out to the shops? They would have been more comfortable at home with you!

NoSauce · 29/06/2019 14:59

Were not we’re

Nearlythere1 · 29/06/2019 15:07

what do you mean somewhere where "fatalism is very common"?

FannyWork · 29/06/2019 19:10

*what do you mean somewhere where fatalism is very common”.

I mean Catholic countries because many of their members believe everything is God’s will and can’t be changed,

My car shot up to 36° inside within 3 minutes today. That could kill a toddler within another couple of minutes.

codemonkey · 29/06/2019 19:20

Your husband didn't leave his kids in the car because he's from a Catholic country. Don't be so weird.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 29/06/2019 19:22

There is a video doing the rounds on FB about how hot it can get in cars & the consequences.
