Sad

He looks increasingly unwell, and seems to be getting very little mainstream media coverage.

What will it take for Nazanin to be freed Sad?

I don't normally hold strong opinions, but this is the reason I joined the conservative party so I can vote against Boris Johnson.

SouthWestmom · 29/06/2019 08:01

At the moment with the US and Iran going off I don't think there is any chance of her release.

I can't believe Boris is in line for PM. The journalist, the gaff over Nazanin, his chaotic provate life, the money wasted as mayor. Unbelievable.

RubberTreePlant · 29/06/2019 08:10

I feel for both of them so much, but they seem to share a characteristic of not really thinking things through, and certainly of underestimating the Iranian government. So I'm equal parts scared for them both and frustrated with them both.

This whole thing started because they ignored Iranian stance on dual nationality and the diplomatic situation in general. Now he's apparently endangering himself in a heatwave in the vain hope Iran can be guilt-tripped. So sad to watch.

Saucery · 29/06/2019 08:17

He’s not doing it to ‘guilt trip ‘ the Iranian govt, he seems to be doing it to make his wife stop her hunger strike. I hope it works. And yes, the lack of media coverage is unacceptable.

historysock · 29/06/2019 08:24

This case is really getting to me too Op. surely to fuck there is something that can be done to get Nazarin home?

Lllot5 · 29/06/2019 08:30

Trouble is I don’t think it will do any good. Can’t see this having any effect on the Iranian government.

NeverTwerkNaked · 29/06/2019 08:31

It's so so heartbreaking. They are a lovely family and don't deserve any of this. Their poor little girl as well.

RubberTreePlant · 29/06/2019 08:32

Quite, I don't think he can be taking advice.

BeardedMum · 29/06/2019 08:53

Isn’t there a second dual uk- Iranian national who is also in the same prison now. Also accused of spying. The travel advise is for dual nationals not to travel to Iran now.

I really dislike Boris Johnson so strongly that I switch off the news when he is on. I just cannot believe people vote for him. Who are these people because I don’t think I have ever met anyone who don’t think he is a massive dangerous twat.

I cannot believe that I hope Jeremy Hunt will be PM. I never thought I’d ever say that......

vinoandbrie · 29/06/2019 09:00

Nazanin has stopped her hunger strike, and Richard has stopped also, as of this morning I believe. I am so desperately sad for them and their daughter Gabriella. She is five. She needs her mum. I pray Nazanin is released soon.

FourEyesGood · 29/06/2019 09:00

Just heard him talking on Radio 4. He’s stopping the hunger strike because Nazanin’s stopping hers. He’s pleased that there’s been lots of media coverage: that was [part of] the point.

SouthWestmom · 29/06/2019 09:01

@RubberTreePlant

What do you mean? This whole thing started because they ignored Iranian stance on dual nationality and the diplomatic situation in general.

I thought she was visiting her family with her daughter and was arrested?

TheFaerieQueene · 29/06/2019 09:07

Sadly the Iranian government won’t be moved by this poor man’s struggle. His eyes are haunting.

On another point. Ffs stop calling him boris.
It is a trope used to make him seem such a loveable chap, like a friend. We don’t call any other politician by their first name. Johnson is as his name.

Idontwanttotalk · 29/06/2019 09:09

They have both given up their hunger strikes this morning. Neither will die.

RubberTreePlant · 29/06/2019 09:19

What do you mean? This whole thing started because they ignored Iranian stance on dual nationality and the diplomatic situation in general.

Right? I'm not sure which bit you don't follow.

She took her daughter, who has UK nationality only, and travelled, as a dual national (some dispute about which passport she was on, i think) back to Iran. So she and her DD presented as a British, or Iranian/British group.

Sh must have known her work for BBC and Reuters put her at risk from the Iranian government, she certainly knew that dual nationality is not acceptable to Iran. In fact, it's an affront.

She took a risk. She should be able to travel freely, visit family etc, of course she should.

But anyone with Iranian or ME connections know what the Iranian government do and do not like. Dual nationals had been hitting trouble regularly.

I hope the Ratcliffes at least serve as a cautionary tale and thus help to prevent similar situations, because having BoJo as PM isn't hopeful for diplomatic solutions.

RubberTreePlant · 29/06/2019 09:25

(And if it turns out there was another aspect to the trip, then all of the above ++++)

ForalltheSaints · 29/06/2019 09:27

I know the legal case over the lies on the bus failed, but is there any legal avenue to pursue Mr Johnson over the statement made about Mrs Zaghari-Radcliffe that was factually wrong? Endangering life or under Health and Safety law?

thedevondumpling · 29/06/2019 09:28

I can't believe how little publicity this is getting. Shame on the BBC and ITV, this should be headline on every news programme. The fact that they are showing smarmy Boris is just adding insult to injury.

I wrote to my MP and they promised to visit him.

Idontwanttotalk · 29/06/2019 09:33

"What will it take for Nazanin to be freed?"
I think she is going to have to serve her sentence out. The UK have already spoken out at the G20 Osaka summit against Iran and their nuclear weapons. Iran are not going to be happy. The UK have also joined the US in accusing Iran of the tanker attacks.

It's as if Iran don't have the ability to separate one issue from another. We've peed them off by being unhappy they have nuclear weapons, therefore they'll pee off the UK by not returning a citizen (with dual citizenship which they don't recognise anyway).

Iran won't release her because they will use her as leverage to try and get sanctions lifted. I don't think that will happen.

What did Boris Johnson do - did the baffoon just mistakenly say she was teaching journalism in Iran when she was actually on holiday or was there something else?

BeardedMum · 29/06/2019 09:35

When is she due release? I thought she was sentenced to 5 years?

RubberTreePlant · 29/06/2019 09:38

Two more years @beardedmum and tge Iranians have confirmed this week that she wi'l serve that.

Benjispruce · 29/06/2019 09:42

He has a wife and child so I hope he wouldn't go that far!

Whisky2014 · 29/06/2019 09:43

So did the woman do what they think she did? And what did Johnson do?

I don't know anything about this :/

Juells · 29/06/2019 09:48

A relative of mine is married to an Iranian who lived here since age 10 or so. Her GM couldn't get a visa to come to the wedding so they wanted to go visit her. They got a lot of advice from our FO (not in UK) before arranging the trip, and had a Muslim wedding in addition to the civil ceremony they originally had.

Seems like the Ratcliffe's didn't really take all precautions.

I've seen several analysts saying that what BJ did is typical of him - lazily skim-reading the papers about the case, noticing her job, then shooting off his mouth with no understanding of the ramifications.

Who votes for BJ and JRM? They're both like cartoon characters, and don't care tuppence for ordinary people, no matter what they claim.

Benjispruce · 29/06/2019 09:50

Nazanin has ended her hunger strike and Richard will end his today also according to Twitter.
