Basically looking for some lovely mumsnetters to tell me what is GREAT for your body!!

Is green tea really what everyone makes it out to be?

What protein powder is best? Should it be gluten free 🤔

What should I be putting into my body to help me feel awake and alive whilst loosing weight and breast feeding!!

Any advice is so welcome 🥰

Protein powder doesn't need to be gluten free unless you are coeliac, but why do you need protein powder? Unless you have taken up pretty extreme weight training/very long distance. Green tea is a very powerful antioxidant but it don't think it has any weight loss benefits. The better quality food you can afford, the better you will feel. Lots of water, fruit and veg etc

comeforthhhh · 28/06/2019 21:59

@tealandteal I want to drink shakes for breakfast thought if you put a scoop of protein powder in it helps with weight loss and to keep you full?

Thats why I am here 😁🤦🏻‍♀️

What are your main aims OP? I.e. weight loss or wanting to learn generally about good nutrition and a balanced diet?

itsobvious · 28/06/2019 22:08

Sorry OP, I somehow didn't read your post properly! You've said weight loss but still feeling awake etc.

Lots of vegetables, fruits, whole grains (brown bread, brown rice etc) reduce caffeine (one cup of green tea would be ok but best not with meals)

Plenty of water! Seaweed can be a healthy snack but not too much as high in iodine. Also healthy fats like nuts and avocado but these are obviously higher in calories.

Porridge is filling and good for the gut. Things like Kale for the iron

It feels hard at first and then you will feel much better!

Avoid processed foods and meats, and reduce red meat. Oily fish is good but only one or two portions a week if breastfeeding as some fish are high in mercury.

Really the more veg the better - I love those expensive Bol pots so I learnt to sort of make them myself with fresh ingredients which was a lot cheaper and also healthier.

I'm no expert but when I finally managed to lose weight I kept to this vague list: eat as clean as possible. Lots of vegetables, fish, lean meat, eggs, nuts, berries, green/fruit teas, coconut oil, cut out or limit bread, processed foods and refined sugars (even don't go overboard eating fruit).

itsobvious · 28/06/2019 22:11

I know the feeling and still no expert but now I've been eating healthier for a couple of years I really enjoy it!

mouldyhousemouldylife · 28/06/2019 22:11

When I say coconut oil, I cooked with it. I didn't eat it. Grin

comeforthhhh · 28/06/2019 22:23

@itsobvious @mouldyhousemouldylife Great! Thanks for the advice.

I use protein powder for a few recipes - for example, to make my overnight oats a bit more filling. I use this one I buy whichever size is best value, from whichever retailer is offering the best price when I want it. It's pretty good IMHO, although certainly not the cheapest. I can't have artificial sweeteners, soy, caffeine, so this is a good one for me, & it's fairly neutral tasting.

My tips are - eat lots of veg, especially the bright coloured ones, raw if possible.
Find recipes you actually enjoy. Meal plan, & prepare food in advance - if you can prepare 2 or more extra servings for later, & store them safely, do it, as it will help prevent you from reaching for the takeaway menus when you're too tired to cook.
Find exercise(s) you actually enjoy. Even if it's just walking in the sunshine, listening to some music.
Drink more water. Get a decent water bottle & use it!
Plan each day's menu in advance, if possible, even if just roughly. If you leave it until last minute, again, you'll be tempted by the lure of the takeaway (or whatever your personal downfall is).
Remember to include enough healthy fat & protein at each mealtime. If you don't, you won't feel satisfied, & you'll be more likely to want to snack, or give up the diet.

Are you still breastfeeding?

rumred · 28/06/2019 23:01

Nuts seeds and beans. Clean and fabulous. Make salads. Stick in cereals. Soya milk. Tofu, marinated. Grow your own herbs and use them. I've been veggie 40 years and fit as a fiddle

Cut out sugar and starch, and stick to real foods. Red meat contains the majority vitamins the body needs, especially b12). After this a few vegetables and some dairy...Greek yogurt, yellow cream, cheese. Careful with fruit, it's again mainly sugar. Steer clear of seed oils for cooking, (use stable ones like butter, olive, coconut, tallow and lard). Fat is perfect brain fuel when it's from natural forms. Limit wholegrains as they are very inflaming and cause weight gain due to very blood sugar raising.

Siameasy · 30/06/2019 08:10

How old is your baby? I started at 3m once things had settled down a bit. I did high fat low carb - carbs 100g a day which is more than usual low carb diets because of the BFing. I did allow fruit but in small amounts. I cut out cereals and other sugar completely and severely limited potatoes and legumes. I lost 4st so by the time I went back to work I was 10st. One of the rules is full fat everything as the understanding is you want to avoid or limit foods which raise your blood sugar and therefore your insulin. Fat doesn’t raise blood sugar and is filling so there is no need to be afraid of it.
