Bloody costume

Feeling a bit grossed out...went to change a maternity costume at Mothercare as didn't like the fit. The shop assistant asked manager for authorisation and came back and said they couldn't....there was some blood near the gusset. Gross gross gross. I'm pregnant, so it's clearly not mine. I didn't notice it when I tried it on at home. The assistant said she hadn't noticed it either. Thankfully I wore knickers when I tried it on at home but still really grossed out. Anyway, because of the blood the manager refused to change it, so I feel grossed out AND hard done by.

Oops, my AIBU is I think they should have changed it! Obviously I am not being unreasonable to be grossed out!

Hmm, rules are rules.

grossed · 28/06/2019 15:12

So it's basically not in shop's interest to remove soiled or damaged items as customers can inadvertently pay for them and have no leg to stand on?!

Completely. However, how can you prove it wasn’t you? A lot of my friends work in retail and I’m always astounded by what people try to return. Of course this has ended up being unfair on you, but the manager isn’t able to 100% confirm that it wasn’t you.

VivienneHolt · 28/06/2019 15:15

I thought you generally weren’t allowed to exchange or return swimwear for this reason? Staff clearly aren’t checking things before putting them back on the shop floor! Sorry you went through that, I would have been grossed out too.

Are you sure it isnt your blood - a snag or spot or shaving nic ?

AyBeeCee10 · 28/06/2019 15:19

Well you cant prove that it isnt yours any more than they can prove that they sold you an item that wasnt soiled.
Just one of those things I guess.

ImMeantToBeWorking · 28/06/2019 15:20

Did you not check to see that the outfit was clean before you bought it? How can you prove that it was not you, that's the way the shop have to look at it?

grossed · 28/06/2019 15:20

Hygiene strip is still intact. Labels are on etc.

grossed · 28/06/2019 15:26

I didn't give it a thorough examination, just picked it up, glanced to see it had a hygiene strip and took it to till. I tried it on at home, didn't like the bust and put it back in the bag. I had no nicks or blood etc. If I was going to be gross enough to return it if it was my blood, surely I'd have sponged it off first?!

Just seen this on moneysavingexpert "When goods are faulty, if you return them within six months, then it's up to the shop to prove they weren't faulty when you bought them. After this, the burden of proof shifts and it's up to you to prove they were faulty when you bought them."

RobinHumphries · 28/06/2019 19:20

But it’s not faulty, faulty would be like a hole or the seam stitching coming undone

user1486131602 · 28/06/2019 19:38

Take it back to different branch, pointing out the stain and using that as the reason for return. If they decide no start getting a bit louder!
Last position, I would call head office and make a fuss about being sold something in such a condition!

Beebeezed · 28/06/2019 20:11

@grossed you obviously don’t think you are ABU so why post this? Do what you need to do for the refund!

Sparklesocks · 28/06/2019 20:13

Oh how annoying. It’s a tricky one though, i don’t see how you can prove the blood isn’t yours.
