To not walk dog in this heat?!

Just had a row with DH as he came home from work to take the dog for a walk around the village. It's 29 degrees and the concrete is red hot! I wouldn't let him take the dog and he huffed that everyone else is doing it and there's loads of dogs about and that I'm being a fuss pot, dog still needs walking in summer!

AIBU?! Yes dog needs walking but not in peak hours when it's this hot! His poor paws would burn to a crisp. I couldn't hold my hand on the concrete for 7 seconds without flinching and when I tried to prove it to him he stormed off and made a comment about me being hormonal and irrational. Sat here silently seething now with dog giving me sad eyes as DH has stormed into the house exclaiming WALKIES and now he's disappointed.

tell your husband to walk around the block barefooted.

YANBU - too hot for your hand, too hot for the dog

YANBU. What’s worse is seeing malamute-type dogs out in the midday summer sun. Poor sods.

Mummyshark2019 · 28/06/2019 17:19

Your husband should take his shoes off and try to walk on the pavement. See how his feet tolerate that. Yanbu.

Opossooom · 28/06/2019 17:39

YANBU. This really annoys me. If I was to walk in it with jeans and a long sleeved top on and be uncomfortable I won’t walk mine. Heat stroke can come easy and be very very serious. X

Take the dog out early in the morning or late at night

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/06/2019 17:46

Dog trainer/behaviourist hat on...

Far too hot to walk dogs on concrete, in the sun - only take dogs out during the day if you can do totally shaded walks in the woods/streams, and even then, thats only for normal types, so no extreme snub noses, extremely heavy coated breeds.

Walk early morning, late evening, again in cool places and still be careful with short nosed breeds, heavy coated breeds.

Checking the temp of the pavement is smart, also consider that some surfaces hold heat for hours after the sun has gone down and reflect heat back up, so a little dog close to the pavement is going to feel far more heat than a taller dog.

Most of my training/walking colleagues have cancelled clients in this heat as its too dangerous, so if we're willing to loose income, we are certainly NOT being over sensitive or hormonal about it!

I wouldn’t even attempt to go for a long walk myself in this heat, it’s stifling here
I have a very big heavy coated golden retriever and he’s really not liking this heat. There’s a little shaded patch in the garden he’ll go to for a little while then he comes in for a drink and snooze on cool kitchen tiles but he’s just not up for much at all. Walking him in this would be so cruel (for me too)
Hope your oh gets it now or you should stick a big coat on him and send him for a walk alone in bare feet Grin

YANBU. during heat like this we walk at 6.30 am or 9/10pm. Our dogs do not cope well with heat at all and I would much rather they were a bit bored and ancy than got heat stroke.

TooManyPaws · 28/06/2019 18:04

I've had problems with one of my dogs getting over-heated even in the evening as she's a very fluffy girl, even with as much taken out as possible. I leave it up to them to decide as I have a large garden for them to lie in the shade in.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/06/2019 18:08

One thing that grinds my gears is good weather dog walkers that take their dogs on walks during the summer at peak sun time and don’t even have water for the dog to drink.

I don't take water because my dog will absolutely not drink it. At the house, yes. Outside, no. He's also Mexican, and super skinny, which probably helps. I wouldn't walk him on concrete though. Ouch.

adaline · 28/06/2019 18:10

YANBU at all. In summer mine is back ideally by 9am as it's far far too hot for him.

sueelleker · 28/06/2019 18:11

I saw a spaniel die of heatstroke in a country park years ago.

dottiedodah · 28/06/2019 18:14

We were at the beach nice and early today .Prom still quite warm .Defo a no no in this heat ,any pavement walking (Maybe he would like to explain to the vet why dogs pads are sore?)

justasking111 · 28/06/2019 18:16

3pm this afternoon outside school I saw a woman in some glittery pink and blue sort of outfit, posing running gear jogging along the pavement with a very large hairy poodle designer cross dog. I was astonished I thought everyone knew about running in the sun on hot pavements was a no no where dogs were concerned. It is 27c here now so how hot it was then I cannot imagine.
