Wibu to go to the gp about headaches?

I feel a bit over dramatic going to see a doctor about having headaches but it's really starting to bother me!

I seem to have a headache almost constantly, going back at least a few weeks, if not longer. I suffered a lot with migraines when I was younger so I know I am prone to 'headachy' type stuff but lately I'm going through packs and packs of paracetamol and ibuprofen because I'm just taking them almost every day. I don't want to constantly be on painkillers, and the normal OTC seem a bit pointless anyway as they don't do much to help.

I have some prescribed immigran stuff for migraines but very rarely take them as I've been saving them for the actual migraine attacks - lately I've been taking them for 'normal' headaches as it's the only way I can get relief! I actually feel the moment where they start to kick in and it's blissful to have the pain go away.

I'm pretty sure I'm not dehydrated, I'm making sure I drink frequently and always have water with me as I work in a hot environment. My pee is virtually clear so that seems a good sign!

Wibu to go to the gp over just a headache or will they laugh me out of the office?

For the amount time you’ve had them I would say not, get booked in for a check up 👍🏻

HughGrantsHair · 28/06/2019 10:16

Also get an eye check done.

divegirl77 · 28/06/2019 10:20

I'm a GP, go see your GP.

RedSheep73 · 28/06/2019 10:22

You definitely should go, but they'll probably be useless and just offer you amitriptyline.

bookmum08 · 28/06/2019 10:24

That is what a GP is for. Make an appointment.

Mummoomoocow · 28/06/2019 10:42

There’s so many medical reasons for prolonged headaches op. I’m being investigated for them right now and it’s not some minor thing

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/06/2019 10:45

You might have just got into a rebound headache cycle. You need to see your GP to rule out anything serious.

Baritriwsahys · 28/06/2019 10:46

Definitely see your GP; I would try and have an eye test done first if you can get a quick appointment; the GP will ask.

cakeandchampagne · 28/06/2019 10:48

You need to see your GP.

candycane222 · 28/06/2019 10:52

Would also second a sight test. It's how I know I need glasses.

In particular, driving in sunny conditions in slightly the wrong car position in slightly the wrong glasses = ugh in the head (and sometimes migraine too) for me.

But it could be all sorts of things and is a recent and noticeable change so yes, worth going to GP as well.

GimmeChocolateNow · 28/06/2019 11:01

Definitely. Mine were a symptom so something v serious, just took a long time to diagnose until I was rushed to A&E. Twice. In 2 days

APurpleSquirrel · 28/06/2019 11:08

Definitely see your GP - and mention anything else, such as problems with your vision, balance etc

TheSandgroper · 28/06/2019 11:11

If your gp can’t help, try a good dietician. Migraines and headaches are a very common sign of a food intolerance.

This may give you something to think about. www.fedup.com.au/factsheets/symptom-factsheets/headaches-and-migraines

TwattingDog · 28/06/2019 11:26

Sounds like the first thing you'll need to do is cut out the paracetamol and ibuprofen - you'll likely be into medication overuse territory and getting rebound headaches.

Have a look at the Migraine Trust for some guidance.

TwattingDog · 28/06/2019 11:27

But yes, definitely see the GP.

Hearthside · 28/06/2019 11:30

I would most definately go to see your gp .Taking headache tablets daily can cause a rebound headache as TwattingDog has said .I suffer bad migraines and gp said this to me if you take too many regularly it has the reverse effect and will actually cause a headache .

viques · 28/06/2019 11:35

I would get a sight test and eye examination done first as your gp is almost certain to ask when you last had one and if you can say "last Thursday and this is the result" you can move on to other possibilities.

PurpleAloeVera · 29/06/2019 21:58

If you can, try the National Migraine Centre (London - Kensington). They are a charity run by doctors with an interest in headaches and migraines. Fill out a migraine/headache diary first

echt · 29/06/2019 22:12

YY to GP and eye exam, and as viques said, the eye stuff first. I have a condition that carries a future risk where if I were to experience a very particular kind of headache, I would have to go to A&E immediately, or suffer very serious consequences.
