AIBU to not mind laundry on holiday?

We;re off on holiday tomorrow, yay! Week in a villa in coastal spain, train to madrid, 4 nights in the capital then home. Self-catering (although i'm not planning on doing much cooking apart from bbq and chucking a pizza in the oven).

Just bumped into a friend in the supermarket when I was buying some of those little liquid washing pods for our trip. She was horrified that I was planning on doing laundry on holiday. I tried to explain that actually, it was just throwing t-shirts, shorts, pants, swimwear in the machine and besides it would probably be the kids who were doing that anyway. She is very much of the opinion that on holiday you do not lift a finger. Ever.

I'm not planning on washing every day - perhaps 3 or 4 times in the stay. It will all dry really qiuckly in the heat. I'm certainly not ironing anything. Doing this means we're not paying ££££ to take extra baggage, teen DS can wear his favourite three t-shirts in rotation and the best thing is you're not returning home with bags and bags of dirty washing.

Other than rinsing out swimwear so the chlorine doesn't ruin it, I do no laundry on holiday. I send DH to the launderette when we get back and it's all done in one go without my house becoming a laundry parlour

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/06/2019 23:24

I only do laundry if we use more clothes than I reckoned we needed when I started packing. I'm a klutz and often get food down my t-shirt.
We tend to go away in our touring caravan. Trying to get towels dry after swimming or showering is a nightmare when there's 3 of you living in a 23ft by 6ft tin can on wheels for a week.

I weirdly love doing washing on holiday

☝️ this

Usually do one load every third day when on holiday. In cities, i like to seek out laundromat‘s, I like the ordinariness of them in an over-the-seas city, the smell of everydayness, cleaning detergent smells, advertisements, signage, busy working folk; excellent places to watch life go by and day-dream.

What a depressing thread for those of us who believe laundry shouldn’t just be a ‘woman’s job’ 🧐

I did say "we do laundry" in my post. DH does it more often than I do, at home and on holiday.

legolimb · 29/06/2019 00:55

I often do laundry in holiday.

Currently holidaying in the USA with family a d we will definitely need to do laundry at some point. Our regular summer. Reak is to France. I only ever rent a house / gite with laundry facilities. I don't want to wear sr dirty clothes or take loads of clothes with me. I fact I like e to buy a particular detergent in France and bring it home to keep tgst holiday feeling going.

Amibeingnaive · 29/06/2019 01:04

Another who much prefers laundry on holiday.

A nice chance to sit quietly with a book while it's in the dryer, plus the joy of knowing you're not going to be going home to a four-load fuckfest.

butterry · 29/06/2019 01:05

Love a washing machine on holiday, one of the reasons I prefer airbnb or holiday home. It's just easy to do in an evening and you don't come home with lots of washing to do. That would be such a downer at the end of a holiday!

Megan2018 · 29/06/2019 06:27

@Wearywithteens DH does 80% of the chores at home, I just happen to like laundry. But on holiday either of us will stick a load on. I’m the main earner and home very little so DH does the brunt of the work plus we have a cleaner.

pancaketits · 29/06/2019 09:07

Actively look for places with a washer/dryer. Nothing worse than being in a self catering set up and a child wets the bed.

I also get quite the thrill from tumble drying everything on someone else's electric bill Wink

rookiemere · 29/06/2019 12:14

DH does all the driving on holiday. I'd rather do the laundry Grinthan that.

reluctantbrit · 29/06/2019 12:20

Hen DD was little I did it a lot l easier to get stains out when washing straight away and no need for a huge wardrobe she would outgrew fast.

I will do it now if there were accidents with food or coming back from a very muddy walk. If we do a beach holiday I wash the towels every couple of days.

But I like my tops ironed and feel too scruffy wearing it straight from the peg. And ironing is not something I do on holidays. It also doesn’t save washing at home, all stuff from the suitcase goes straight into the laundry baskets.

fishonabicycle · 29/06/2019 12:24

I don't have enough clothes to not wash any for a fortnight! Even if I did, i prefer to take hand luggage only and wash anything that gets dirty.

RottnestFerry · 29/06/2019 12:25

23ft is an enormous caravan! Imagine what it must have been like for four of us in a caravan half as long for a fortnight.

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/06/2019 14:21

@RottnestFerry I meant to type 21ft (that includes the towbar, so internal length is a lot shorter).

I come home to an empty laundry basket, as I make sure that the laundry is up straight before I go away. So it's just the clothes we've taken with us to wash.

Cwtches123 · 29/06/2019 21:45

We usually book an apartment or villa in Spain or France and I always make sure there is a washing machine. It means we don't need to take too much with us and I come home with a case of clean clothes.
When we stay in the UK I also prefer to have a washing machine, mch more useful than a dishwasher when staying in a caravan!

S0CKS · 30/06/2019 12:48

Our hotel suite has a washer dryer im oddly quite excited to just travel hand luggage instead of using my 23kg case allowance and getting off the plane quickly no chance of my stuff going missing ill just wash our clothes once each whilst there im going to carry a collapsible bag too so if i buy anything (awesome shopping where were going aparinately) ill put the hand luggage case in the hold on the way back and carry my big collapsible as hand luggage.

JustMarriedBecca · 30/06/2019 12:55

We've just self catered in Cornwall and I've laundered there. Set the machine on delay overnight, hang up in the garden in the morning and dry when we get home. 10 minutes effort. I don't iron.

I hate all-inclusives for a variety of reasons - mainly the people - but lack of laundry facilities to hand is also a factor.

And like someone else says, sea breeze and bright sunshine make my whites, super bright

fussychica · 30/06/2019 12:56

Always do washing if facilities permit, great to have a case full of clean clothes to bring home rather than piles of washing which I'll probably struggle to dry in the UK.

Mind you I prefer self catering to a hotel so happy to cook too. We often go away for weeks or even months at a time so it would be hugely expensive and pretty boring to eat out every night.

This as well. I don't do all our stuff, but there is something very satisfying about doing small-ish loads a couple of times so we don't have to buy and take a full week's clothes plus spares for 5 people. It's like laundry used to be when I used to do it for myself.
