We're off to Spain on Sunday with 2 young kids. We're going to Salou not too far from the forest fires in Tarragona...
Aibu to be very worried? Is there anyone mumsnetter in Spain at the moment that can advise on what the temps actually feel like?

YANBU OP. But bumping for you as my family are terrible with even the slightest bit of heat so I am a bad example.

BottomliePotts · 28/06/2019 21:45

I can't help sorry

My parents are in the south of France where nearby temperatures were 45° earlier today. They've spent the say indoors with the air con on

GoadyMcGoad · 28/06/2019 21:47

YANBU Sad

BoronationStreet · 28/06/2019 21:47

I don't know about forest fires but at least they have ac in Spain...so it may not be too bad OP. I do understand your concerns though and YANBU.

MrsMaryMooFace · 28/06/2019 21:49

My friend lives in south Spain and said although it's hot, they're missing out on the proper heatwave? Hopefully this is true!

Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/06/2019 21:51

No I’d be concerned too. Yes they may have aircon but you don’t go on holidays to stay holed up inside all day. Hope it’s better than you fear.

HariboHippo · 28/06/2019 21:55

My parents are currently in Mallorca and have said it’s very hot, but there is a breeze and it’s fine with the pool/sea etc to cool off in. The forest fires are obviously the concerning bit though, I get that OP.

TotallyAnonymousUsername · 28/06/2019 21:57

I live in Madrid. It was about 40 degrees today. It's a bit like standing in an oven with someone pointing a hair dryer on hot at you. That said, if you're on holiday and have access to a pool and an air conditioned hotel room with nothing you have to do you'll be fine. Stay out of the sun between 1 and 4 or so, always walk in the shade if you have to go anywhere (including waiting in the nearest shade for pedestrian crossings to change), drink a lot, don't let kids get crazy running around, plus sunscreen and other normal hot weather stuff.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 28/06/2019 21:59

I’d be concerned about heading out on holiday near where there are serious wildfires. I don’t know the geography, but big fire systems travel very fast and can spot tens of kilometres ahead of a front. I’d be less worried about the heat than the fire and would suggest taking advice about that.

Emergency services will limit access to affected or potentially affected areas - there’s a chance you could travel to Spain and not be able to enter the area.

Theghosttrain · 28/06/2019 22:00

We're in France. It's been 40 in the shade and more than 45 in the sun. Tbh it's unbearable, it's like that moment when you step off a plane in a hot country and a rush of hot air hits you. Except it's like that all the time. Hope you've got air con!

OhFanPolyeo · 28/06/2019 22:05

We live just outside Barcelona. Today was insane, 42 degrees! It's 11pm now and still 35 degrees.

Looking at the weather app next week is going to be cooler, mid 30's.

Make sure you have aircon. Fans are like sitting in front of a heater as it just blows hot air around.

HandsUpHere · 28/06/2019 22:14

-Keep re-applying sunscreen especially if in and out of the water and sweating.
-Stock up on salty snacks and water.
-Get DC factor 50 full body swim suits.
-Watermelons have a high percentage of water as a cool snack.

Have a great holiday Smile

Imthevoice · 28/06/2019 22:15

Am currently in South of France and today was not as bad as yesterday. If you are near coast it’s not so bad as there’s a breeze. If you’ve ever been here in August - same weather just in June.

lazymare · 28/06/2019 22:16

What's the point in worrying?

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2019 22:29

I'm going to southwest France in two weeks. The heat sets my MS off. I'm dreading it!

rosiejaune · 28/06/2019 22:30

YABU to worry about it when you are helping cause similar extreme weather events by (presumably) flying out there.

bookishtartlet · 28/06/2019 23:21

Spain in July is always warm, so not really a valid reason if heat is your main worry. It's not unusual for that area to get mid to high 30s. I'd definitely be worried about the fires.

24hourhomeedderandcarer · 29/06/2019 00:48

ive friends in malgrat atm which isnt far from salou, they are coming back monday

it been high 40s all week and they have been struggling as their 7 y old is autistic

but i thought going in july/august(i know its june) is always 30s/40s

Nameisthegame · 29/06/2019 01:20

It’s not good, I would consider moving your holiday, currently in Santiago Compestela as I live near tarragona the smoke can be smelt for miles.

Nameisthegame · 29/06/2019 01:23

If you go in this heat all you will do is try and keep you kids cool, last year ai speant all bathing my daughter making frozen water bottles to but on the fan, going to air con places and walking miles early in the day to be near the pool in the woods...the heat is serious
