To ask for your help explaining this to my boyfriend?

So, I'm trying to explain to DP about due dates and the fact they're calculated from your last period.
We know full well I conceived 2.5 weeks after that as we hadn't slept together for ages before that.
So now he's confused that we slept together and conceived say 12 weeks ago but baby is measuring 15 weeks.

How do I explain this?

BogglesGoggles "You’ve made a mistake. The measurements are actually standard in the first trimester. If you baby is measuring 15 weeks then you must have conceived 15 weeks ago."

Nope. my sister had IVF baby, and categorically knew she was 12w3d at 12 week scan. But the midwife insisted insisted she was 13w2d because of the measurements. She tried to argue the point, but they lept saying "Nope you're measuring at 13.2, so you must be..." and wrote in her notes Confused

Even with IVF the dates by measurement are more accurate WRT delivery IIRC. That is why they change it.

@BarbaraofSevillle I wasnt going to mention that aprt as it would be even more confusing but yep a 1 day old baba would be 2 years oldit is insane though...I think there was some talk a few years ago about getting rid of this silly age thing in Korea as even they were confused and annoyed by it lol

IrishGal21 · 29/06/2019 23:33

@Eliza 'Collectively turning a year older gives Koreans a very particular concept of age. Once born, a baby is considered to be one year old, accounting for the time spent in the womb. The baby will turn two not a year after it is born, but on New Year's'

IrishGal21 · 29/06/2019 23:34

PS.In Korea, everyone is 1 from the time they are born. And everyone gets a year older on New Year's day. whhhhhaaaaattt?????! i know mentalness
So your Korean age is always either one or two years older than your Western age. ... Even more so because Koreans frequently go by the Lunar (Chinese) New Year. #mindblownyetagain

OP show him this;

You conceive roughly two weeks before your due your period

On a 28 day cycle -
14 days of build up follicles grow your egg
egg is then released fertilised and then its 5 days for your blastocyst to grow to the point where it can implant. Roughly 9 days after that is when you are due your period. (so technicaly its 2 weeks old at this point)

They count it from the first day of your last period because that is the "start" of your cycle. So they tell you that you are 4 weeks preg but you are only actually two.

So if you are classed as 4 weeks with your GP your clear blue weeks indicator would read 1-2 weeks.

They always count it from the first day of your last period.

I hope this helps OP. xx

P.S Sadly i have IVF so thats how i know the process of growth and dating xx

IncrediblySadToo · 29/06/2019 23:51

Maybe try explaining to him that it’s like a ‘film release date’ not the date you watch the movie

Footyfoot · 29/06/2019 23:54

Ask a doctor / midwife to explain it to him .

Lemonlady22 · 29/06/2019 23:55

men are so thick!

Can't he use google? There's 100 articles explaining it.

I'd say..... DH:

Pregnancies are dated from the first day of the last period for the sake of consistency. That is because it's impossible to date it from the day the egg fell out the tube and got fertilised with the sperm. All women know when they bleed so it's an easy, consistent place to "start" counting.

All women drop the egg (ovulate) on different days. Some people will drop it two weeks after the first day of their period. Others will take two and a half weeks. Hence the discrepancy. I dropped mine a week and a half later than the average. My cycle (period to period) must be longer than most.

Add to the fact that babies grow at different rates and on a 12w scan measurements can be out by several days anyway, I really wouldn't worry too much.

So, to conclude:

12 weeks is how long I've been pregnant

15.5 weeks is the gestational age given by medical professionals used for official dating purposes on paper because periods are easy to spot and identify. So they're a good starting point to count from. It's the same for all women.

So this means on paper, I was technically three weeks pregnant when the egg met the sperm!

Can't see why that's so difficult to understand?

Hope that helps!

Does he think you cheated on him? If not - surely he can used the internet to find out? Seems a little strange....
