OK so I know we should really follow the advice on the box etc....
But I took my antihistamine this morning. My eyes are soooooo itchy and I've another 12 hours to the next dose.

I do it all the time and I'm still here.

The scratchiness drives me insane

I suffer really badly with hayfever, and hate it, it ruins my spring (I'm fine by mid July/August, but end of May and June are usually the worst for me) This year I tried something new and started to take my anti histamines in March - 1 a day through March and the beginning of April, then two a day for the end of April, all of May and the beginning of June. Since mid June I've done two in the morning and another mid afternoon and I've been so, so much better. My eyes have occasionally itched, but nothing like the previous years (last year I ended up at A & E as I couldn't see, and it turned out my itching had scratched my cornea, which was really painful) I take Cetirizine Hydrochloride, nothing else has ever worked, including prescrition anti histamines. I did speak to my doctor wbaout it, who's seen me every year previously with horrific hayfever, and he said it was fine and obviously working for me. I'll stop taking them entirely mid July, then start again next March.

As pp have said, depends what your taking. I had a bug bite that was terrible last year, so my dr said to take loritadine,4x4 a day so 16 tablets in total.
Only while the bite went down (3 or 4 days) so unless you have something else wrong with you then two a day is ok

I've had 2 today. I often do. I remember seeing a friend with a severe allergy neck about 6 in one go after they'd accidentally eaten egg so I thought 2 seemed ok.

I’ve taken several a day. I figure the dose is set for the old and weak so if young, fit, healthy we can take more!

faw2009 · 28/06/2019 15:31

I once took 3 tablespoons of piriton instead of 3 teaspoons. I was fine!

Next year, if you know you usually get hay fever in June, start taking tablets daily at least a month before. The antihistamines will build up in your body to overcome the histamines that will come in June. An allergy doctor told me this.

peardrops1 · 28/06/2019 16:10

I think with most anti-histamines you reach peak therapeutic dosage with one, therefore taking a second makes no difference (and is therefore pointless). You're already at the top of the graph curve with one.

I JUST took my second one. Pollen very high today

PeevedNiamh · 28/06/2019 16:44

My DH was told by an allergy consultant to take two a day as he has been taking them so long.

Likethebattle · 28/06/2019 18:31

I’ve had 2 loratadine, 2 cetrizine, 3 acrivastane, nasal spray and eye drops and still a sniffing, sneezing, watery eyed mess. Ffs i’m Allergic to outdoors!
