Aibu to randomly change the spelling of my name?

My name is long I have a ‘Sunday name’, no issues with that spelling at all but no one ever calls me it and people are often shocked it’s my name. Anyway the nickname is also a name.

I’m marrying soon. My nickname spelling looks bloody crap with ohs surname. It’s hard to explain but others agree!
As an example: changing from Jayne to Jane. Both valid spellings (the ‘new’ spelling I would like is much more common and I have constantly spell out my nickname) but the new one looks sooooo good with my new surname, so good.

Can I get away with this?

It really depends on what the name is. I know an Alison who was always Ali, but somewhere along the lines has become Alliy.
It's horribly awkward and nobody can spell it properly.

My daughter has her Sunday name, but she’s always known by her nickname (eg Jennifer/Jenny). When she was about 8 she slowly persuaded everyone to change the spelling (eg. It should be Jenny, she spells it Jennie). I resisted and continued to spell it the “proper” way, but she won the battle!

I work in a job where I have to identify people and do anti money laundering checks and it’s such a pain when people use a name that isn’t their actual name and then use different versions of different names on different documents, so I’d recommend you either keep your birth certificate name on all official documents, bank accounts and utility bills and just use the new name informally or get a deed poll and change your name officially.

Women! Give your children your surname. Otherwise major problems like this might crop up.

Sparadrap · 27/06/2019 22:17

My friend did this. I’d known her for 20-odd years as one spelling and she changed it. It still catches me out on cards and things, I have to think every time I write her name.

Just be prepared for people to get it wrong.

Why wouldn’t you be able to change the spelling of a nickname? It’s not your name so I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be able to change the spelling.

codemonkey · 27/06/2019 22:30

What the actual fuck are you going on about? No one gives a flying fuck about how you do or don't spell your name, Sunday name, nick name or fucking god knows what name.

codemonkey · 27/06/2019 22:49

NB. No one is 'shocked' that X is your name. You are either projecting some sort of demented nonsense on people else everyone you know is insane.

To summarise: YANBU to change your name's spelling. YABU to assume that anyone gives a shit.

Sorry I buggared off to finish my assignment. Thanks all! I’m just gunna go with it. I didn’t want my kids to have my surname as its shit to spell and I didn’t want that for the rest of their lives. One actually does have my surname but it’s up to him if he wants to use either tbh. I don’t wanna change it by deed poll away from my long name because it’s a family name. I get that I might be being confusing for some people so I’m gunna take off on this thread now before the creatures start coming out (see above) thanks for the input and I’ve decided what I’m going to do.
