Dental Implants

I've been considering getting dental implants for a while. I'm wondering whether or not it's worth all the hassle so am asking if any of you have had implants or are dentists. I'm a bit worried about the tooth removal stage as one of my friends recently had a wisdom tooth out and is still in pain, as well as whether or not the procedure is safe. Can anyone help me put my mind at rest?

I have two (lower molars, 5th tooth back on each side). It was entirely safe.

I didn't find the extractions a bother. I got a dry socket with one, but it was quickly sorted out. The molars that I had replaced were in such poor shape that I was glad to see them go.

The titanium bolts go in first. They're left poking out of your gum while the bone fuses to them, and then at a separate appointment a short time later, the crowns are put on top. Having titanium bolts screwed into your skull is weird, and fairly intense, but then it's over and done. Having the crowns popped in is really straightforward, like clicking Lego into place.

If it was a hassle at the time, it was a worthwhile one. I had mine done nine years ago and they've been no trouble since. They're really good and strong, and I can bite down just as hard with them as if they were my own natural teeth. I'm really glad I had it done.

Thanks so much for replying. How long did each stage of the healing process take? I'm ahs but I'd really like to know

I have an upper front implant. The extraction was definitely the worst part and that was easy. The implants been the least painful or bothersome dentist experience I've ever had.

I got mine extracted the week before xmas, then due to other reasons had to wait for the post to be put in place until the april and crown in july.

MrsMozartMkII · 27/06/2019 20:29

Yes. Had three top left back.

It wasn't much fun, though my dentist was excellent, and from start to finish I think it was about eight months.

There was some bruising for sure and some ouch, but it was well worth it and I'll go back for a couple more, those these will be single ones.

I think the extraction took a week or so to heal, and I had to go easy on the bolt implant sites for a few days.

I just had to steer clear of hard, crunchy food and keep my mouth well rinsed and clean: it was all really straightforward. Definitely worth it in the long run.

I had two bottom molars. I was very pleased and lucky to have the treatment on the NHS. I found the process quite horrible, but worth it. However one of them failed and the extraction was horrendous. I decided not to have it replaced. I won’t give you the gory details, I was assured it was very rare. I probably wouldn’t consider it for cosmetic reasons and personally would request a general anaesthetic if I had to have it again, but it depends on your tolerance.

How much did everyone pay for their dental implants?

It's not available on the NHS so I had to pay £250 for a bone graft and the (ONE!) dental implant will cost about £2,000!!

comedycentral · 27/06/2019 21:36

I'm still undergoing my work for two. The work started around feb time and the implants will be fixed by the end of Jan.

The bone augmentation and screw part is intense as someone upthread said. I needed 3 days off work plus the weekend to recover from the bruising and swelling.

Can't wait until the work is complete!

MrsMozartMkII · 27/06/2019 21:39

Think mine was about £4k-ish.

I had my number 9 front tooth replaced, with bone grafts. I had local aesthetics which worked very well but my God the pain when they wore off. I wept driving home. Needed time off work for bruising and swelling, but excellent after care by periodontist. The screw has to be kept clean with smooth dental tape, not stringy, as it can leave bits round the implant and promote infection.

The tooth bit was not a good enough match in terms of colour and I was sent to the chap who actually paints and bakes the teeth for implants. It took three tries (about two hours) before he was satisfied with the match. Extraordinary skilful judgement of colour/shading to match my number 8 tooth.

I had one of my front teeth done this year, had previously had a ruptured root on a post crown and had to wait 6 months with a bridge before I got it done. It was £2.5k and I have to say the best money I have ever spent. I am not well off by any means and that's the price of a family holiday for me. Shop around and ask your dentist for recommendations. The private dentist I used was amazing, I had the work done in stages on my day off and was back at work without anyone knowing I had anything done. Can not recommend it enough - given me back confidence I had lost with the bridge.

myidentitymycrisis · 27/06/2019 21:53

Dfriend is having this done. 2 weeks ago removal of teeth and posts implanted. 8 weeks later next stage , implant. She is having 3 upper front so has a plate denture in the interim
Expects it to be finished by the autumn.

Im on my second set of implants , it will be 6 in total . I am soooooo glad i did it . The only horrible part was the deep drilling notbecause of any pain at all but it did feel like my jaw was being drilled out . However my dentist and nurse were amazing especially at that point . One thing i would say is dont leave it too late aa they have to check you have enough good bone as some people dont also i found wearing a plate dreadful
