To think it's out of order to buy your council house then sell it to a private landlord ?

Bought their council house cheap from the local authority a few years ago, approx half market value

In our local authority you can't sell for 5 years. But once able to sell, they sold it within a week of it going on the market and Made about 100k in profit selling it (to a private landlord). with the proceeds of the sale they will be soon moving into a new much bigger, nicer house in a lovely area

Meanwhile some poor fucker will be soon be renting their old house for about double the council rent

This person is, by the way, an out and proud Labour activist and member

So. Aibu to think it's a shit thing to do?

"They" in my OP is me

I did a reverse, sorry

But I wanted some honest responses. Cos I feel fucking awful about it and like I'm going to get some kind of terrible karma I know that sounds stupid.

My new house is beautiful but I can't be 100 percent happy about it.
I don't deserve it. I feel like I've cheated getting it, because I've gone about it in a shitty way and what I've done goes completely against my principles

I wish I'd been able to buy on the private market to start with, I'd never have ended up in a council house and I wouldn't have had a part in taking one out from the stock. I can't change anything I guess but I honestly feel so disgusted with myself

YABU then.
Why waste everyones time with a reverse?
Namechange is easy enough. Hmm

I’m fed up of hearing parents and grandparents moaning about their darling children and grandchildren, how they can’t afford to rent as it’s so high, and housing is so expensive etc etc. As they sit in their council bought home, and don’t see the irony of it🤷🏻‍♀️. Yes my father is one of them.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/06/2019 15:02

"@Pinkfinkle how did he do that?" Pinkfinkle was making the point this has been common for decades to the extent that the private landlord she posted about was able to make a huge profit by renting out so many ex-council houses they had bought from tenants who exercised their right to buy.

BlueSkiesLies · 27/06/2019 15:03

Don't hate the player, hate the game

^this

it is a terrible, terrible policy - but you can't hate people who have benefited from it

DingDongDenny · 27/06/2019 15:12

Cant happen in Wales anymore
Right to buy is finished there

The law has changed in Scotland as well so this no longer happens. It's a chance to build up the housing stock and make sure people who need a council house are more likely to get one.

I can understand on an individual basis why people do this. But as a society it makes no sense and should be scrapped in England as well. Not surprising there has been no change under a Tory Government

DuckWillow · 27/06/2019 15:44

Been going on for years. I rented an ex council house from a private landlord at £600 a month. Since that time (8 yrs ago) the rent has doubled to £1200 a month.
I no longer live there thankfully but wouldn't have been able to keep up with that inflation in rent.

Its less the landlord that's the issue, its central government who don't allow the money to replace social housing.
Thankfully some ex council places are being bought up by social landlords such as housing associations.

EssentialHummus · 27/06/2019 15:52

The system is moronic. I can’t get angry at any individual exploiting it.

gamerwidow · 27/06/2019 15:56

Yeah it’s shit but blame the game not the player.
When I was selling my house (not Council) I had no interest whatsoever in who bought it other than will they give me the money I want. That’s all anyone wants when they sell their house. I don’t think it’s fair to expect people who buy their council houses to be held to a higher moral standard than everyone else.

gamerwidow · 27/06/2019 15:59

PaulinesPenStash it’s to your credit that you worry about the morals of this but seriously do you think rich people about the morals of who they sell their houses too. Give yourself a break you’ve done nothing wrong. You’re the least of the countries woes.

gamerwidow · 27/06/2019 15:59

*rich people worry about

Redglitter · 27/06/2019 16:04

They're moving as the house is too small for their needs, was fine when dc were tiny. Plus the area is shit

In that case I'd be moving with a clear conscience. You're moving for a valid reason not just to make a profit. Enjoy your new house.

PaulinesPenStash · 27/06/2019 20:04

@Redglitter

Thank you. It is a valid reason I guess but I still feel bad ☹️
