To say no?

New job, so obviously want to make a good impression and show willing. But they seem to be taking the piss, wanting me to volunteer on my days off (it's an organisation with volunteers), and stay late for extra work also.

I already work a 45 hour week. AIBU to say no? I'm in probation so worried this will count against me, and I'm not very good at sticking up for myself in these situations. Any advice friends?

It's a difficult one! I would probably not do it, as I would worry if i did it once you would always be roped in to it, I would just say something about needing to get home to the kids etc.

As an aside, being in probation doesn't really mean much in the UK, even when you pass it you don't get any extra legal rights per se, as until you have been working there for 2 years they can still fire you for pretty much any reason outside of a few protected reasons.

I would say I have private commitments

MaltedMilk88 · 26/06/2019 13:28

I'd just say no and nip it in the bud now otherwise it will be a worse problem down the line

Tell them you're unable to facilitate giving them more than 45 hours a week as it would impact on your work/life balance Grin

A bit much when you're already working 45 hours a week?! Say no, and if you want to elaborate, your outside commitments mean you don't have any extra time to spare. And rush off busily as soon as you finish work each day!!
