Aibu to consider a mooncup

Newjobnewstart · 26/06/2019 07:05

Are they all they are cracked up to be?
Im seriously considering one (ive just started a new job and there are no sanitary bins so a but clueless what to do!)
However i get really heavy periods and clots (use a pad and tampon). Would this be a disaster for me?

I started using a moon cup after my 5th child. Very heavy uncomfortable periods. The moon cup has been like a miracle cure to period pains associated with tampons and has also cured the dryness you get from them too. It took me 2 periods to sus them out and what works. In the first 2 days i use a pad just in case but there is really no need. It's a security blanket really. No more expensive pads etc and no more impacting on the environment with the waste. Give it a go.

Peachesandcream14 · 26/06/2019 07:34

I love mine and will never switch back to disposable Sanpro. I've been using them for a while now and haven't had any major leaks or disasters so far. My cramps seem far less bad since I stopped using tampons, I can't feel my cup at all once it's in.

Patchworksack · 26/06/2019 07:38

I swapped about 6 months ago and am never going back. Use a pad for back-up until you feel confident with it. Also noticed fewer cramps with a mooncup. Your work sound a bit crap though - what do other female staff do? Have you asked why no sanpro bin?

BiscuitMachine · 26/06/2019 07:39

I agree, I wouldn't use anything else. Been using one for 11 years now. I had to use a tampon in an emergency a while back (accidentally flushed mooncup down the toilet) and I'd forgotten they were so uncomfortable.
I will say, they take some getting used to at first, and can be a bit fiddly and messy, but don't give up!

Trebla · 26/06/2019 07:41

Love my cup. Check what type suits you though. A mooncup is too long for me so I had to get a diva cup shorty xl. Trial and error at first but life changing.

FiveStoryFire · 26/06/2019 07:42

It didn't work for me. It leaked all the time. Now I use a natural sea sponge and find it great. No chemicals, plastic or leaking. Plus you can still have sex with one in. Bonus!

Trebla · 26/06/2019 07:42

I use reusable pads (hannahpads) and back up on first few days. Looking into getting some period pants though.

coral13 · 26/06/2019 07:43

I think the mooncup is amazing. Way less gross (not at all in my opinion) that I'd expected as the blood doesn't start drying and going gross like in tampons and towels

whichbearisbest · 26/06/2019 07:44

Do it. It's changed my life - I lived with horrible, heavy, flooding, clotty, painful periods that ruined 10 days of every month for about 10 years.

The Mooncup has just made it not a 'thing' any more. It can cope with extremely heavy flow. I don't know how it works (possibly partly the soft suction on removal?) but my periods are shorter by a couple of days at least, and I very very rarely have pain. It's honestly like not having a period at all. Best £24 you'll ever spend.

stucknoue · 26/06/2019 07:44

My DD's use one with modibodi period pants for extra protection, one dd is in the navy so super active and it doesn't leak,

Natsku · 26/06/2019 07:45

I love mine. I still leak at the beginning of my period (very heavy periods too) so I used to wear a pad as back up until the heaviest bit is over but now I got period pants for the back up and it's even better - no worries about leaks on clothing or running out of supplies.

Ffsnosexallowed · 26/06/2019 07:47

I got one last month. I have heavy periods and need to empty it every 2 hours, wear a pad with it for back up. I still prefer it.

BeanBag7 · 26/06/2019 07:54

Give it a try, what have you got to lose?

Tellmemoretellmemore · 26/06/2019 07:58

No sanitary bins?!
Is there a sink in the same cubicle as the toilet?
I'd highly recommend a mooncup.

FiveStoryFire · 26/06/2019 08:00

I would query the sanitary bins. Aren't they legally supposed to provide them for health and safety reasons?

Newjobnewstart · 26/06/2019 08:04

Thanks guys will give it a try.
I dont think they have needed bins before - mainly men and women over a certain age!! Not used to being the young one in my 40s.
Only on a temp contract so dont want to rock the boat.

I use an organicup and it’s brilliant, the mooncup brand one didn’t work for me but there’s loads of different ones out there

FaithInfinity · 26/06/2019 08:06

Have a look at this quiz to see which style suits you best. I have endometriosis and using a cup has been better for me than tampons, I seem to cramp less.

codemonkey · 26/06/2019 08:06

Love mine. Thorough recommend one. Interested about a workplace with no sanitary bins though. Can you explain more?

FakeUsername · 26/06/2019 08:08

I found it liberating from dealing with clots and floods. Lasts much longer

MyOpinionIsValid · 26/06/2019 08:10

Is it a one room toilet ie with the basin adjacent to the toilet. Or is it a room with cubicles and external sinks.

Im going to be the unreasonable voice here. I wouldnt want to wander across a floor and wash out my menstrual blood in a communal sink, where someone might come in. On reflection, its pretty grim to be washing out menstrual blood in a communal sink full stop if there arent cleaning products to hand.

Sanitary bins are a legal requirement but in the absence, why cant waste products be wrapped, bagged and disposed of at home? Eg What would you do in a friends house? Leave it in exposed in her bath room bin? Flush? Or take home.

Cyberworrier · 26/06/2019 08:14

Really not on of your workplace, but as everyone says, mooncups (or Diva cups) rule. Not sure if anyone’s said how nice it is not to have remember to buy pads or tampons.
I’d suggest either period pants or reusable pads alongside the cup if you have very heavy periods. Once you’re used to a cup, it’s so much more comfortable than tampons. And less waste!

CornerofUpandDown · 26/06/2019 08:18

Lot's of women use menstural cups due to poor toilet facilities - you'll be in good company.

But please take the PACII quiz first! Menstural cups are not one size fits all and this quiz can Street you in the direction of a cup that will work for you.

CornerofUpandDown · 26/06/2019 08:19

*Steer, not street

Newjobnewstart · 26/06/2019 08:26

Thanks.
I had thought of wrapping and keeping in my bag but concerned about the smell etc.
At a friends i normally wrap and put in outside bin straightaway.
Off to do quiz.
