Hi all
I'm in an industry which requires occasional weekend work away, but I have to also work Monday to Friday..
I have been told I have more than a third of weekends to work in the next 10 months... this receives no pay. This exceeds anything I expected by some distance.
I have been offered a position which requires none nor any working away, more money etc.. should I just go? I've expressed my feelings with my boss but nothing has happened since..
I have a young family

I'd take the new job but I can't stand working away so not much help here sorry

HollowTalk · 25/06/2019 17:05

Of course! You can't be expected to work away from home over the weekend for no extra money.

sotired2 · 25/06/2019 17:13

Would extra hours take you under minimum wage rate? As if so cant not pay you.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/06/2019 17:18

Why would anyone work 7 days a week for no more money Confused

What about minimum wage?

The working time directive? You could work what - 14 days without a break ?

StormTreader · 25/06/2019 17:22

Do you have any notice etc to give? What would it do to your commute/expenses? If you can make it work then go as soon as possible.

Jump!

underthebridgedowntown · 25/06/2019 17:25

Why would you stay??

5foot5 · 25/06/2019 17:27

In this situation I would go in a heartbeat, hand let them know why you are leaving

Oneminuteandthenallgone · 25/06/2019 17:28

Of course! You can't be expected to work away from home over the weekend for no extra money.

A pretty common expectation in a profession role.

WeShouldOpenABar · 25/06/2019 17:30

It shouldn't be a common expectation it should only occur outside of the norm unless you're at a level where you're heavily compensated for the pain involved. Jump ship, no question

Myotherusernameisshy · 25/06/2019 17:38

The new job sounds like a much better option. Is there any reason why you think you should stay?

nickymanchester · 25/06/2019 17:39

As others have already said your employers will probably be caught by the Working Time Directive. Unless you have signed a form saying that you opt out then they cannot make you work more than 48 hours per week.

Also consider if these extra weekend hours would take you under the minimum wage. Just doing a quick back of an envelope calculation, if you're on less than £19,500 then this would take you below minimum wage (assuming an 8 hour day).

But, in any event, leaving all that aside this job sounds really awful so, yes, you really should just go!

The only that is unreasonable is even asking the question, just do it.

Geminijes · 25/06/2019 17:45

Do you really to have ask if you should change jobs to one that pays more, involves no weekend work and no working away?

Hecateh · 25/06/2019 17:45

Definitely jump

Itsjustlife · 26/06/2019 09:31

thanks all, the only reason I questioned it is because I made a couple of bad moves in the last 15 years, moved to jobs that were terrible! don't want to make the same mistake

great input thanks!
