...to not come into work tomorrow?

I work part time Tues - Thurs in a technical design job. I have little control of my work load and at the moment have nothing to do. Last Thursday I sent an email to line manager and various other managers asking for some work for this week as I had eeked out some work and had not been told what I was working on next. Got to work this morning and there were no responses to my email. I've asked around a few other people for work but no one has anything for me to do.

This is far from the first time I have sat at my desk browsing the internet and watching the clock and I am fucking sick of it.

I've spoken to my line manager about it before but nothing has changed.

Shall I email the managers again and say I'm not going to come in until they have something for me to do?

How about being proactive? If there appears to be work for others, then ask around to see if others need assistance.

I appreciate it is demoralising being in work with nothing to do but if you refuse to come into work because there's nothing to do then you're skating on thin ice.

I work in an civil engineering consultancy and if there was a quiet time within the office (project wise) there are hundreds of things which can be done.

It sounds like a mixture of your poor attitude and poor management that no other none project related activities are being carried out as I have never heard of a consultancy letting a good employee just sit there and do absolutely nothing while costing the company money unless the employee couldn't be trusted to do things

Raise a formal grievance through your union.

My team had that for 6 months while lawyers sorted things out. We reckoned it cost the company £250,000.

Why should I take leave, paid or unpaid if the company can't find me work to do?

Because they are paying you to be in the office and available.
Can you see if there is a WFH policy?

Yes I can do the work that is going on in the office and that they are recruiting for. Its just that there are no projects available at the moment. There is something in the pipeline but I have to wait till it has been approved. Until then I jsut get told, sorry, there is nothing to do.

It is a highway design consultancy. I can't just conjure up jobs to do on my own initiative..

Anyway. Home time in 8 minutes.

If you are between projects then you should be asking others what you can help them with or take on some archiving or stock taking the stationary cupboard or something. I'm sure there is something you could be doing.

Can you spend the time working on your CPD for the future? Maybe join a PEI and volunteer for some committees or special interest groups? ( Lots of employers will give you time out to attend)
You say you don't have expirence to get chartered (assuming you mean CEng) could you pass sometime getting EngTech or IEng as may lead to more projects?

AquaPris · 25/06/2019 22:31

Ask to WFH?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 25/06/2019 22:42

Sounds to me like you are asking to be made redundant. I'd be worried. As it is you've applied for something else which is something.
