AIBU to get a cleaner

I want to get a cleaner (probably for 2hrs every fortnight), but DH thinks we should save the money and just do the cleaning ourselves.

For background: DH and I both work full time, no kids. DH has just started a new job. He now earns £500/month (after tax) more than before, but also has a long commute 4 days/week (works from home the other day). I have a long commute 2 days/week, work from home the other 3. As DH is now home late most days, I am doing more housework. I don't mind the additional food shopping and cooking, however, I really dislike cleaning, and I resent the idea of having to do more of it because of DH's new work schedule. DH says he'll still do 50% of the cleaning, but (1) I'd rather spend that time together in a more enjoyable way and (2) DH is the type to not 'notice' that thing need cleaning, so it tends to fall on me to suggest that it's time to clean the bathroom. So either way, I'll end up doing more cleaning, or living in a dirty house, or having to remind him every fortnight that the floor needs mopping.

Because we're now both earning a decent wage I'd like to get a cleaner, but DH thinks we should save the money (and seems to think that getting a cleaner is an outrageous thing to do for a young-ish couple without kids).Who is being unreasonable?

He is
We're a young couple without kids and we have a weekly cleaner. Means we don't have to do it in our free time.

I would give up food before I gave up my cleaner. She's a godsend. It's the best money I spend, on anything.

It's a very good idea to have a cleaner. Once the cleaner starts working for you, your husband will come round. It will be money well spent.

My husband was the same when we first hired a cleaner once a fortnight, many years ago. He was more than OK with it when the cleaner came so ignore your husband.

He'll will freeze over before I give up my cleaner. She's brilliant! It's worth every penny. My mum just doesn't get it though. She says "why would you spend £40 a month on a cleaner" my answer is why wouldn't you!

We get sniffed at by friends for having a cleaner - we have a fairly basic TV package, no Netflix, and very basic SIM only phone contracts.

Their spending on these things AT LEAST equal our weekly cleaner, but for some reason having a cleaner is seen as bad/luxury discretionary spending, and having a phone/expensive TV package/subscription services is seen as normal.

But then my house is bloody spotless once a week, easy to keep on top of otherwise, and the only finger we have to lift to achieve it is the one putting the money out.

I know which I prefer!

Get the cleaner!! You work hard, you can afford it, enjoy your leisure time, don't spend it cleaning Grin
