Doubles tennis players touching

Please tell me I'm not alone in finding doubles tennis players always touching hands after EVERY point so skin crawlingly, cringeworthy to the point that I can no longer watch a single game of doubles..tell me it's not just me!

Do you mean they do fist bumps?

ArgyMargy · 24/06/2019 20:31

Not just you. But it's taken you a hell of a long time to notice it! Same in any doubles sport now. And I seem to remember similar behaviour in the beach volleyball at the Olympics (though I could be mistaken).

Beesandcheese · 24/06/2019 20:37

Teams do this though, not that I am OK with it Grin but you see on Sports things cycle teams high giving, football teams in huge group hugs, gymnasts doing high tens. It's all very physical.

boabab · 25/06/2019 09:33

Nb I do mean 'fist bumps'

Is there anything that people don't find offensive?

araiwa · 25/06/2019 09:56

I suppose they could yell and scream every time they win a point

StillWould · 25/06/2019 09:59

The thought of the Bryan Brother's chest bump still makes me shudder

For your own sanity, never watch volleyball.

senua · 25/06/2019 10:09

It's not the same. The team don't do a group hug every single time they pass the ball. They do it when something extraordinary happens, like a goal.
What's the point of tennis doubles fist bumping after every single point (won or lostHmm)? It makes the action meaningless. They might as well congratulate each other for breathing.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/06/2019 10:17

Don't overthink it.

For many players it is how theyy mentally fnish ne play and reset fr the next. It is a physical full stop.

For others it becomes a bit of a habit that they have to do or it is unlucky... superstition runs high in most sports, think lucky socks ect,

Whatver the reason, they don't do it for you, they do it for themselves. So why bother being bothered by it? Would you find it reasonable for people to comment on / ridicule the little routines you have at work?

DontMakeMeShushYou · 25/06/2019 10:17

Perhaps they're using it as a form of communication as to how to play the next point.

boabab · 25/06/2019 14:12

I hear the last 2 replies and I get your points but, really? I mean, really? Getting yourself 'mentally right' after one point in tennis. A 'habit'? 'Communication'? Come on now.. it's utterly ridiculous this fist bumping. John McEnroe never did it. Martina never did it. They were the greatest doubles tennis players ever...

OP posts:
boabab · 25/06/2019 14:15

Senua gave the best reply - Smile - they do it after EVERY point no matter good or bad, won or lost, long or short! They might as well do it after breathing - heck one day they'll do it 4 times after every point and then a joint groan and then a hug. Then play the next point then back to the ritual of 4 fist bumps, joint groan then hug ...it's ridiculous

You need a hobby - maybe not tennis though.

NCforthis2019 · 25/06/2019 14:35

Confused really? This bothers you? You need a hobby.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/06/2019 15:22

John McEnroe never did it. Martina never did it. No. McEnroe screamed and shouted, kept his mental state on a knife edge. Navratilova concentrated heavily on the ball, never took her eyes off it, kept all her focus on it to prove to the press that they could say whatever they wanted about her, she was still going to win - you may have forgotten she was regulalrly vilified during the early part of her creer!

And yes... habits, superstitions, mental preparation. ALL competitors have their quirks. It is part of what makes them good... they always do the same thing the same way with little deviation. So their actions between points behaviour is equally formulaic.

Senua had a point, almost. To them it is the same as breathing. Any elite athlete will tell you the same.

GibbonLover · 25/06/2019 16:00

You think fist bumps are bad? How the hell do you cope if the footy is one and a goal is scored? Some of them behave like they're about to start getting it on with each other!

RosaWaiting · 25/06/2019 16:06

Yes I find this really bizarre too.

boabab · 26/06/2019 15:57

Well judging by some reactions I need to get a hobby. Strange, I'm surprised more people aren't bothered.
IMHO it's similar to footballers ubiquitously crossing themselves and double finger pointing to the skies when running onto the pitch.
Pointing out these ludicrous rituals hardly makes me the strange one?! Hey ho

OP posts:
wijjjy · 26/06/2019 16:24

Why would anyone be bothered? I don't understand, do you have some sort of phobia about other people having physical contact.

Don't watch cricket. Slaps on the arse for bowlers after a good ball.
