To worry about anaphylaxis?

OK folks. I'm finally putting it out three. I have an irrational fear of anaphylactic reactions! It's becoming debilitating. It started in September when I got ill and seemed to develop severe health anxiety.

I've never had a severe reaction to food in the whole 30 odd years I've been alive but when I eat chocolate I get like a sore spot come up on my tongue, which goes down after a while but its completely put me off eating it! Has anyone else experienced this or developed severe allergies as an adult?

I'd like to hear from people coming from all angles. Thanks!!

Just avoid it 🤷‍♂️

I know what you mean.
I've never had a problem either but because my son does carry an epi-pen I manage to panic myself too Blush. I struggle to eat what he's allergic to.

@megletthesecond My DH is anaphylactic to peanuts and I used to live on them before we met but I wouldn't do much as touch a packet now! Even if we got divorced lol.

You can develop allergies at any time.

You should start keeping a food diary so you can try to determine what it might be, then you should go and see your doctor.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy will help you to manage this, if you haven't had it already.

Talk to your GP.

There is no realistic reason why you'd suddenly develop anaphylaxis as an adult.

I get the same sensation when I eat chocolate (and melon) but I still eat it.

NutsCrackersCrazy · 24/06/2019 20:34

@SavoyCabbage God don't! I already read that! Shellfish/fish is a major allergen though isn't it?

@Jemima232 This time last year I was a chocoholic! I have gone from 14st to 9st 7lbs Shock

No, Jemima, food allergies can develop at any age, child or adult.

buttertoasty · 24/06/2019 20:40

I'm allergic to peanuts and shellfish and have crippled myself with fear before, had to get over it as it was taking over my life.

For what it's worth it took a good few reactions over the years before I had anaphylactic shock- the reactions get worse with time.

If you are concerned I would go to the doctors and get yourself tested

NutsCrackersCrazy · 24/06/2019 20:46

@buttertoasty That's interesting

Jemima- I developed an allergy to prawns after I was pregnant with ds.

At first I just avoided eating them. Then I had a reaction from touching a prawn and then I had a very bad reaction last year in a restaurant where I was sat next to someone eating them, so the gp prescribed epipens. Apparently with shellfish you have to be careful about allergens transferring in steam from cooking. It is also a common allergy to develop later in life.

NutsCrackersCrazy · 24/06/2019 20:56

@hazeyjane Do you think a life threatening allergy to chocolate could develop? Last year I used to eat it everyday. I miss it loads!
