Dog jumping at midwife

I don't know why I am panicking about this but I am.

I had a midwife appointment today at home and a family member was coming by about 30 mins before anyway so to help us out and take the dog for a walk this afternoon.

Midwife also arrives 30 mins early, about 30 seconds after the dog walking family member. Dog is very very friendly but does like to greet visitors, so was behind a baby gate to be sorted for his walk. Family member couldn't get his harness on and started flapping about it so asked me to help and opened the baby gate briefly. Dog runs in and bounces over to greet midwife, jumping up a few times and very excited. I lured him back away and shut the gate but was obviously flustered.

He was friendly of course and just wanted to say hi, I know that's no excuse for jumping, however he was having his lead put on for his walk so was excited regardless and wouldn't normally jump up in this way.

I apologised several times and they didn't pass any negative comments but I am worried that they will now think there is an issue. My dog is very calm the rest of the time, and very doting with baby (obviously never left alone - he is only allowed near baby when she is being held!)

AIBU for being anxious about this?

YABU! Stop over-thinking it and enjoy your baby Smile

VivienneHolt · 24/06/2019 13:55

I don’t think you have anything at all to worry about Flowers

Letshopeitworks · 24/06/2019 13:58

I hate it when dogs jump up at me but I even think that’s fine and wouldn’t be bothered or think anything about it

Bibijayne · 24/06/2019 14:00

When I had midwife (and now HV) visits, they all greet our bouncy dog first. No one is remotely worried about her. Friendly dogs are often over keen in their own homes.

RandomWok · 24/06/2019 14:02

I wouldn't worry about it. My large breed puppy tried to eat the bow off the HV shoe at the pre baby visit. She was okay about it and it wasn't mentioned by anyone.

PuffsMummie · 24/06/2019 14:03

Agree, no need to worry. x

Freudianslip1 · 24/06/2019 14:10

I don't think there is anything to worry about but please train your dog not to jump up on people. I don't care why they are doing it or how friendly/calm/loveable they are, but I don't want either me or my dc to be jumped on.

Nothing to worry about, they are humans too and understand dogs can get over excitable at new people to their homes!
HVs will always put a note on the system to say a dog is present at the property, but it isn’t to put anything against you. We have a 10 year old staffie who has been brought up with the kids (11, 8 and 2) and he looks all mean and menacing but he’s a big softie and genuinely wouldn’t know how to hurt a fly.

newmomof1 · 24/06/2019 14:21

We've had visits from 3 midwives and HV. My dog is super small (2.5kg) but noisy - he barks at people he doesn't know.
None of them have batted an eyelid - all gave him plenty of fuss.

Trust me, they'll have encountered worse!

MrsCasares · 24/06/2019 14:22

If this happened to me when I was a community midwife I would have brought dog treats for my second visit.

Don’t worry midwives (especially community) have seen it all.

annonymousse · 24/06/2019 14:36

I'm a dog loving community midwife. Don't worry about it.

Slicedpineapple · 24/06/2019 14:49

Thanks all I really appreciate it. Was panicking afterwards that I would be reported for having an exciteable dog! Just bad timing that they arrived at the same time as somebody else and his harness etc were getting dangled about! Recipe for a very excited dog.

To the pp who mentioned training him not to jump at people, I do this and don't encourage jumping, just very bad timing that this all happened at once.

When the midwife came to visit me at home after DD1 was born, my dog went through her handbag and ate her cheese and pickle sandwich Blush

Jemima232 · 24/06/2019 14:53

Another community midwife here, OP.

No problem, I promise you.

Slicedpineapple · 24/06/2019 14:59

I am so grateful we have community midwives on Mumsnet Grin

I felt exactly the same at my first HV home appt, dogs are friendly but have always been allowed to greet us like maniacs.

Warned HV after checking she was ok with dogs, they had a mental 5 min as they do then slept the whole time. She did ask if I thought they’d be ok with baby (jealous etc) I said one of them will be v jealous but the things we were planning on doing to help. She said her daughters dog was the same & really surprised them so had no negativity from her at all x

Slicedpineapple · 24/06/2019 15:14

anonforthespies I've been really lucky with community professionals so far that they are all huge dog lovers and really keen to say hello to him. Today it was a different MW so I felt a bit bad!
The other MW we see actually recognised our dog from the local field, and our HV has a dog herself, and seemed a big advocate of babies growing up around dogs. I have panicked that they would have an issue with him because he is a bull breed but they've all been lovely!
