My dd is 12. She s got her savings and wants to buy an instant camera.

My points are

In my opinion Polaroid cameras were shit first time round, surely they are no different now?

Finfintytint · 24/06/2019 09:17

Polaroid is expensive. At least with a digital you can delete poor photos and not waste any film.

Didiusfalco · 24/06/2019 09:22

I think Polaroid is a bit of a gimmick and the film to replenish them is so expensive. If she gets digital she can do photo editing, so can get more out of it. You can get decent digital cameras second hand too, lots of places where they will have been thoroughly checked and still come with a guarantee ie Wex, mpb.

I bought DD the fuji insta camera, IMO it is cheap chunky plastic, expensive for new films, the photos are not much bigger than a passport photo when printed, it is not great quality either.
It is left in her wardrobe, I am not buying more film, waste of money.

IhaveALooBrush · 24/06/2019 09:23

The films for instax and Polaroid are expensive and don't last overly long.
Digital is better and cheaper. You can still send off for Polaroid style prints of your photos and it's still cheaper than Polaroid film overall.
I use instant cameras for work they're crap. If available I prefer to use my phone and a zink printer as they come out better.

Treaclesweet · 24/06/2019 09:28

Don't get the new Polaroid. DN has one and the pictures are terrible, rarely even usable. Total waste of money.

LucyAutumn · 24/06/2019 09:33

YANBU.

Polaroid ceased production a few years ago and as a result companies such as the impossible project and Fuji instant film have taken advantage of and capitalised on the gap in the market. It is subsequently an expensive hobby to maintain for a child.

Look into a good digital camera for her and maybe an instant film printer as a compromise? That way when she runs out of instant film she can still continue shooting and can also print multiple 'instant film prints' of one shot.

I got an Instax for my birthday, I’d wanted one for ages. I do love it but have found myself limiting the shots I take because the film is so expensive. The photos are also absolutely tiny so not like the old Polaroids. I actually found a Polaroid yesterday taken on my Spice girls polaroid in the 90s, it’s a pic of my Dad and I. Very nostalgic.

Anyway, I’d probably pluck for a digital although I think cameras have lost their ground because everyone has an excellent camera on their smart phone.

Pawmageddon · 24/06/2019 10:18

We got dd a Nikon coolpix w100 a year or so back. There may be Better on the market by now but it was what suited us in the price range at the time.
The choice was because she's too young for a phone, its dropproof (to a metre) sandproof and water proof. So we can take it in holiday and she can take it in the pool/sea and I don't have to panic when I see her swinging it around or leaving it on the ground or at the edge of a pool.
Oh and it syncs wirelessly to an iPad. So I never have to fish out the card and download stuff.
And it's rechargeable.

Thanks so much for the replies...she s using her birthday money so it's really not fair of my to veto it...my friend said it's her choice and they are v cool for her age group. So I got it for her. I m also giving her my older digital camera. She's taking art and her dad s a keen photographer so maybe she 'll follow his foot steps...thanks so much everyone. She s so happy

It is kinda cool to see them print, my DD loved hers but used two sets of film on her dolls.
I found an old disposal camera, there was 2 shots left on it, I took one of the DC when they asked "how come you can't see the photo" when I explained they'd to be developed, it may me realise they'll never do that, I showed them my old Walkman with CD combo they thought it was hilarious. Grin

To be honest, because of the limited amount of film you tend to take images more wisely on an instant camera.

CottonSock · 25/06/2019 09:09

I think my dd would love one (they don't care about image quality really). I'm putting this on my gift ideas list. Which one did you get?

needsomesleepy · 25/06/2019 09:15

Divisor camera with a mini printer?

needsomesleepy · 25/06/2019 09:15

*digital

EmeraldShamrock · 25/06/2019 09:16

I got the fuji instant but DP works on electrical retail so we got a good discount.
There on the 3rd model now.
They are plastic chunky, looks cheap but the DC love them.

Guest8989 · 26/06/2019 09:53

They have the fujis for £25 in Asda and Sainsbury’s

SerenDippitty · 26/06/2019 10:20

It’s funny that youngsters like prints but not the idea of waiting for them. When I was young there was nothing more exciting than finishing off a film, taking or sending it to be developed and waiting for the prints to come back. Half of them would be rubbish but that’s not the point. Grin
