Hi everyone!

Long time lurker and this is my first post here (posing in aibu mainly for traffic)

I'm 22 and about to be moving out of home for the first time now that I've graduated uni and got myself a full time job, got some savings away for furniture already.

Basically, I need a full list of what I need to buy as I'm convinced I'll forget something 😂 the flat I'm looking at comes with fridge freezer, dishwasher, oven and washing machine all built into kitchen so don't need those.

Thanks guys.

Something to sleep on and under. (Bed, duvet pillow, covers for duvet pillow and sheets x2- one to wash and one to use)
Something to relax on (chair, sofa, beanbag)
Something to relax with (be that a TV or a bookshelf)
Something to cook with and eat on. (Pans, wooden spoons, kettle, cutlery, plates cups)
Something to make you feel at home. ( Cozy blanket, candle, wine)
Something to tidy with (washing up sponge, dustpan and brush, fairy liquid, laundry detergent)
Other than that, settle in and see what you need as you need it, otherwise you will buy a load of stuff that you don't need Grin
Oh. And a tin opener Wink

Congrats on setting up on your own!

What I’d do is mentally walk through your day ( and think about this as you actually go through the week) and take note of you actually use. Every time you touch something - a towel, face cloth, bath mat, pick something up, kettle, mug, teaspoon, coffee jar, etc.

The things you do actually use are your priority.

Look at sales - quite a few on just now so it’s a good time! Check out charity shops or free cycle for other stuff. I got a lovely, brand new extending dining table and 4 chairs for £70 from a community recycling project. It had been donated by the retailer because the packaging had been damaged!

I usually have two sets of bedding, so one on bed one in wash/linen cupboard.

Have fun!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 23/06/2019 22:18

Bin bags
Scissors

Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:18

Thanks for all the replies! Literally making a big list in my diary as we speak 😊

So scary but exciting at the same time! Ahhh I can't decide if I'm more excited or scared haha

Budget-wise - if you can afford it, then my preference would be to buy bed and bedding, sofa and soft furnishings new if possible, from a hygiene point of view as much as anything. Although worth investing in good quality for these expensive items. Other, easily cleaned or painted stuff can be second hand.

sevenoftwelve · 23/06/2019 22:20

But surely if you forget something you just go out and buy it when you realise? Going shopping isn't a one time deal, unless you're moving somewhere with no shops to live off the land?

What you think you'll want to have and what you'll actually use, need, and want may well be different.

Think through the basic essentials you need to get through an ordinary week, get those and then gradually add in other things you want/need over time.

Running your own home will be different to how you're imagining (purely because you'll develop different ways of living), so there's less waste if you add to it as you go along rather than buying shed loads of stuff based on the fantasy home you think you'll have.

codemonkey · 23/06/2019 22:21

What you do need: decent sharp knife

What you don't need: cushions

Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:24

@sevenoftwelve haha yes I am close to shops so can deffo do that, just wanna make sure I have the necessities so I feel slightly less stressed about it all

Buy a decent bed if you can. Get your kitchen bits and something to sit on then get settled in and see what else you want to buy. Don’t just go out and get it all in one hit where is the fun in that?! Take your time to peruse crockery sets etc otherwise you’ll end up buying twice because you’ll want to replace it all.

Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:25

@codemonkey yes sharp knives is definitely a good idea, at one point we had none in my parents home as old ones were terrible and waiting for new ones, I had to cut chicken breasts with scissors 😂

CustardOmlet · 23/06/2019 22:28

Washing up bowl, dish clothes, draining rack and a bin. Not everything will go in your dishwasher, and everyone forgets the bin!

Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:28

@AtSea1979 yeah I wanna get my essentials out the way first then slowly build the rest, I've got a colour scheme in mind for most rooms, but I know that could well change depending on what I see whilst shopping so better to take time! Plus definitely more fun going on more than one shopping trip haha!

OP posts:
Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:30

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude I would have definitely forgotten scissors, thank you haha!

Me again! I’m doing this just now has have just bought a flat.

For sofas, check out independent furniture shops. I went into a shop as I was passing, thinking it would be too expensive for me, but found exactly what I was looking for and it was substantially cheaper than similar from DFS and better quality.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/06/2019 22:30

So much the list is endless.
Prioritise crockery, cutlery, microwave and settle.
Before I moved out I done a big shop room by room, condiments, cleaning products, shower products, tea towels, towels.

EmeraldShamrock · 23/06/2019 22:31

*Kettle

Jurassiclover · 23/06/2019 22:32

@Seeingadistance yeah that's a good idea! I have a furniture factory type place near me which I plan on checking out. It's the type where it's more end of the line stuff or limited stock remaining etc and quite often they have amazing deals so I need to plan a trip there definitely!
