Pro-fuze-ly or Pro-fews-ly

Charlieandthechocolatecake · 23/06/2019 16:27

I just need to know. I always used to use Pro-fuze-ly but anti-English-language DP insists pro-fews-ly is the only way to go. I've been using his version since.

Were not married yet, together 9 years, 2 DS's. That said I'm happy to LTB if he's right. I couldn't put up with knowing I'm wrong. This will break us.

If I am being unreasonable, I will go ahead and sign up to the Open Uni and pick English over Education Studies.

Kind Regards.

The latter?

Pipandmum · 23/06/2019 16:27

Latter.

WatermelonCarrier · 23/06/2019 16:29

The latter for me.

MeSoTooSo · 23/06/2019 16:30

Pro-fewes-ly

Confused
iklboo · 23/06/2019 16:31

The latter.

DramaAlpaca · 23/06/2019 16:31

The latter. Definitely.

LadyRannaldini · 23/06/2019 16:32

Pro-fews-ly, with the second syllable being very short.

BreconBeBuggered · 23/06/2019 16:35

Not quite sure what the question is. Do you mean with an s or a z sound? I wouldn't notice either alternative, really, though I'd probably say s myself.

Katebob22 · 23/06/2019 16:37

Second one.

BumandChips · 23/06/2019 16:37

Pro f use ly. No z sound.

Shoppingwithmother · 23/06/2019 16:40

The way you’ve written it, they would both sound the same, but if my interpretation is correct then your DH is right.

The middle syllable rhymes with loose, not with lose.

Phoningliz · 23/06/2019 16:42

How did you imagine the vote buttons working? Confused

Weedsnseeds1 · 23/06/2019 17:12

He's right

SoupDragon · 23/06/2019 17:16

"Use" but when you use it to say "no use" rather than as I used it earlier in this sentence 😂

nippsout · 23/06/2019 17:44

I assumed
Pro-fuze-ly = Yanbu
Pro-fews-ly = Yabu

Yabu

Her0utdoors · 23/06/2019 17:48

The latter, I wouldn't know what word you were trying to use if I heard you say the former.

DragonMamma · 23/06/2019 17:51

The latter for me too. Sorry OP.

I hear the lone parents board is useful Wink

iklboo · 23/06/2019 17:52

OP says the fuse bit as in 'fuse box'

Or use as in 'I use Mumsnet' when most seem to say use as in 'you won't get much use out of that'.

Singlenotsingle · 23/06/2019 17:55

No z sound. It's pro-few- slee

hula008 · 23/06/2019 17:59

prof-YOOSE-lee

lazylinguist · 23/06/2019 18:02

S not z. Thinking about it, I think words with 'use' in them often have a z sound when they are verbs, and an s sound when they are nouns, adjectives, adverbs etc - like use, abuse, diffuse, which have s or z depending on part of speech.

MrsDimmond · 23/06/2019 18:02

Second syllable rhymes with puce when I say it.

SugarToothbrush · 23/06/2019 18:19

Pro-fews-lee (like Bruce Lee)

dudsville · 23/06/2019 18:20

"S" not "z".

GorkyMcPorky · 23/06/2019 18:24

I never heard this word used as a kid and would have read UZE. However as an adult, if I was thinking about it rather than slipping into my background vernacular, I'd use EWS.
