To ask if I'm missing something here?

I went shopping in my town yesterday and there was an event happening re decreasing food waste which is obviously a good thing, except they advertised this event by tying bunches of balloons to lampposts up the street leading to the event and there were also big bunches of helium character balloons for sale.

Am I missing something? Is food waste (a lot of which is biodegradable) really worse than hundreds of balloons going to landfill or even worse, if they are released, landing in the countryside and subsequently being eaten by wildlife which may die as a result?

Didn't make sense to me.

Nor me!

They don't have a clue do they?

I bought a box of catfood sachets with a sticker on the side boasting about a new scheme to recycle the sachets only to find that to use it, I will need to wash out all the sachets (so increasing water use) and drive miles to deposit my sachets to be recycled in the nearest collecting box.

The final straw was that there was a coupon in the box for £1 off my next box of catfood, and for no reason at all, the coupon was encased in a plastic bag.

I agree, so much plastic for a little bit of food and putting the voucher in a plastic bag is ridiculous.

Its called geenwashing. When a company makes a show of being ecofriendly but really dont give a shit.

Iamtheworst · 23/06/2019 18:36

The washing of recycling is my most hated thing. Because it all has to be washed again so we’re wasting drinking water in an attempt to be more green. Ok the trucks and bins would be stinky and gross but its such a waste

DontCallMeShitley · 23/06/2019 18:58

McDonalds won't give you coffee in your own re-usable cup. You have to have one of their non recyclable ones.

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/06/2019 19:07

McDonalds do offer a recycling scheme though, which is something, although reusable cups are obviously better, but people aren't going use it while they put stickers towards free drinks on their own cups.

Maybe they were biodegradable balloons?

forkfun · 23/06/2019 19:36

I agree with you, but the issue with food waste is not purely the actual biodegradable food that is wasted, but also the fuel, water, feed, fertiliser, transport, packaging, etc. So for every few slices of mouldy bread we are throwing away, we are wasting a whole bunch of resources.
Obvs doesn't excuse the balloons.

I haven't heard of those. Having googled I see they are made of latex. Still seems they are bad for wildlife and doesn't look great according to this link:

You're right forkfun as you say, it goes beyond a few mouldy slices of bread.
