To not mow my lawn?

Flutra · 23/06/2019 14:24

I haven't mown my lawn for about a month now and the most beautiful vibrant orange flowers have grown. My garden looks like a wild flower meadow. I'm really reluctant to mow while they're still in bloom but worried my neighbours will think it looks unkempt and that I'm lazy. The neighbours all have amazing gardens which doesnt help!

If it looks nice keep it and tell nosy neighbours it is a wildflower lawn to encourage bees. Make sure you keep hedges and anything that might affect their gardens tidy though.

Unless it's a euphemism Yanbu!!

Idontwanttotalk · 23/06/2019 14:33

Just mow it when the weeds stop flowering. I've seen a lawn recently with dark orange flowers all over it and it looked stunning. I like it in others' gardens but mine has to be neatly cut.

Even if it was a euphemism its still ok to not mow your lawn!

Even if the op had things growing in it??

I'm holding off mowing ours as the bees visit the flowery weeds that have started to grow.

TremblingFanjo · 23/06/2019 15:16

We've given up mowing ours - I've been throwing grass seed down every spring for the last few years only to have bare earth by the autumn. This year I covered it with seed and left it - added some wild flower meadow seed a few weeks ago and it looks great now. All the earth is covered, the new seed has taken off and even under the trampoline is growing new grass Shock

If you mow a neat path through it, or a narrow strip around the edge, it looks more intentional.

Your orange flowers, if they look like long stalked orange dandelions, are probably "fox and cubs".

Plantlife charity recently asked gardeners to count the number of flowers in 1 sq m of their lawn, in order to estimate how much nectar was available to pollinators countrywide.

It's proven that the higher the cut the higher the wildlife count so YANBU. I like the idea of mowing a strip to walk through to make it appear deliberate rather than you just being a lazy mare Grin
