To ask if I can rescue my stainless steel saucepan

I’m so sad, I got given a set of really good stainless steel saucepans over 25 years ago by my grandparents when I bought my first home.
DD decided to make some pasta and chucked the dry pasta in the already heating saucepan whilst waiting for the kettle to boil to tip the boiling water over the pasta. She subsequently forgot and we only knew when the pasta was smoking in the pan!!!
Well, this is the result, spot welded carbon on the bottom - I’ve tried boiling vinegar, baking soda scrub and it will not budge. Is there anything I can do? Il be gutted if it needs to be thrown

Try tinned tomatoes , heat , simmer for 10 minutes , throw them away then scrub.

PeoniesarePink · 23/06/2019 09:39

Soak it in boiling water with a dishwasher tablet, leave overnight then reheat gently with the liquid still in it. I've done it quite a few times, you just need to loosen the burnt bits.

And use a metal scourer.

madamim · 23/06/2019 09:39

could you try one of those oven cleaning kits? Smile

CornerofUpandDown · 23/06/2019 09:40

Bar Keepers Friend! I've got off worse burn marks with it. It's also great to have around for cleaning other things too.

TheVanguardSix · 23/06/2019 09:40

Cif and hot water.
Leave it for a few hours over overnight.
Should come right off with the scouring end of a sponge (but might leave some slight yellowish stains which are no big deal).

FamilyOfAliens · 23/06/2019 09:40

If it’s welded on, do you need to remove the marks? I’ve cooked in pots marked like that and the marks come off eventually.

TheVanguardSix · 23/06/2019 09:40

Yes, Bar Keepers Friend is excellent stuff.

Sharkattack2 · 23/06/2019 09:43

I did wonder about just using it as it is, I cannot believe how completely hardened and solid the black marks are. Even wire wool won’t touch it. I’ll try all the suggestions so thanks all, much appreciated

Does it matter? Carbon won't harm any future meals.

BeyondMyWits · 23/06/2019 09:44

cross posted...

Firgoodnesssake · 23/06/2019 09:44

A scoop of washing powder and water. Simmer on a low heat and the black marks will just come off

SpitefulBreasts · 23/06/2019 09:45

Biological washing powder, leave it to soak overnight and the marks should come off.

ThorosOfMyr · 23/06/2019 09:48

Caustic soda and boiling water - swish around and pour down drain (will unblock that too). Perfectly safe on stainless steel.

ZazieTheCat · 23/06/2019 09:50

If you’ve got a garden, leave it out, upside down, on some grass overnight. The dew will take care of it.

Or maybes it’s the fairies...

mumwon · 23/06/2019 09:54

@ZazieTheCat or maybe its the slugs Wink

OxanaVorontsova · 23/06/2019 10:02

Another recommendation for bar keeper’s friend, amazing stuff!

wineandroses1 · 23/06/2019 10:07

I second Astonish - it’s brilliant for removing stains and burns, great for cleaning oven doors etc.

FlaviaAlbia · 23/06/2019 10:16

Washing soda in water and leave it to soak for a few days. Just don't get any on your skin or leave it anywhere children or animals can reach it.

We were given some old pyrex dishes like that when we moved in to our first house, after soaking for a couple of days you'd have sworn they were brand new.

itsmesoitis · 23/06/2019 10:21

Boil some Fat Coke in it or add Vinegar to the baking soda you've tried, leave overnight then boil and scrub.

Worked for me when DH forgot to add water to rice!

Tallgreenbottle · 23/06/2019 10:23

Get a tub of astonish stainless steel scouring paste. Takes everything off everything.

womaninthedark · 23/06/2019 10:24

Boiling vinegar cleans most things.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 23/06/2019 10:26

Fusilli pasta?

Teddybear45 · 23/06/2019 10:31

Go to an Indian store if possible and find some Indian washing up powder designed for stainless steel. It will come off easily. If you don’t have local Indian shops that stock this; then crumble 5dishwasher tablets into the pan, scrub, and leave to soak.

ivykaty44 · 23/06/2019 10:32

Washing powder and a little liquid - it’ll come up all shiny
