About chicken in Sainsbury’s?

mycatislickingherpaw · 22/06/2019 21:28

Sent the in-laws to get a chicken carcass to make broth. Didn’t know if they would get one but they were going to Sainsbury’s anyway so I asked them to ask. Usually I get a whole chicken and then make broth but this time I wasn’t planning to eat chicken first.
Anyway, they came back with the carcass but also with half the chicken meat still attached. I’m shocked. Does it mean that every time we buy breasts or whatever other part so much chicken gets thrown away?
This is absolutely unforgivable! For the chicken, for the waste in general, and for the people who can’t afford to buy it but aren’t given it for free.
I’m going to buy more whole chicken from now on, please do the same.

Sainsbury sell chicken carcass?

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/06/2019 07:41

Yes I see that now, apologies.

But I don't think it's necessarily the case that the rest of the chicken is thrown away. After all, supermarkets sell legs, wings and thighs, so maybe they just hadn't finished butchering that chicken, or made a mistake?

Selling what is effectively waste for 99p is a bit cheeky though, you always read about butchers giving bones away for free to anyone who asks for them, after all, it reduces the amount of waste that they have to pay to have taken away. Or maybe they charged you because they saw that you were getting some useful meat? I'd just stick it in the freezer and consider it a bonus.

But I agree with the poster who says that home made stock tastes of nothing. That's unless you put loads of salt in, which is defeating the object of not using stock cubes.

BarbaraofSevillle · 23/06/2019 07:42

Supermarkets with proper in store butchers (Morrisons have them, clearly this Sainsburys does too) will package meat to be sold in the shop. It won't be all the meat sold in the shop, some will come from off site, but some of it is butchered onsite.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 23/06/2019 07:48

Our sainsbury's has a separate fridge secton with meat that looks like it was probably butchered on site, on polystyrene trays with cling flim wrap amd an individually printed label by weight.

mycatislickingherpaw · 23/06/2019 07:49

How do you make your stock? I boil the carcass with lots of herbs and veggie leftovers for some hours on low heat and then leave it in the pan for 24-48 hours, depending on how much time I have.
A risotto made with stock cubes tastes completely different from the one made with home-made stock!

If your chicken stock tastes of where you are doing it wrong. I always use the carcass when I have cooked a whole chicken but will now try buying a carcass. I never buy chicken breasts, I find them the least tasty part of the bird and can be very dry unless cooked with liquid.

Water not where. Autocorrect fail.

Blackcountrychik83 · 23/06/2019 08:06

My ex used to work for Sainsburys and Tesco as a Baker and they sell (or did sell) quite a few bits which don't get advertised. Bags of yeast, fresh pizza bases are 2 that come to mind. These tend to be from their own stock but will sell you them if you ask.

EleanorReally · 23/06/2019 08:07

ask sainsbury, what do they do with the carcus if they dont sell it to you.
when i worked in a chicken factory every single thing was used, the carcus were crushed for cat food

EleanorReally · 23/06/2019 08:10

if they dont sell it to you, do they throw it away?

borntobequiet · 23/06/2019 08:13

Like a pp suggested you can joint a whole chicken yourself and freeze leg/thigh portions and breasts. I use the carcass and wings to make a chicken, chorizo and cannelini bean stew which oddly enough tastes much better than if I use breast or leg meat. Nothing is wasted.

Betsy86 · 23/06/2019 08:28

I have worked there forever and never seen a chicken carcass come through the checkout. As a pp said you can buy yeast etc but the chicken is a new one to me.
Its all sent in ready cut and portioned out the butchers do package some up for the main shelves the rest on the counter so you can choose your own portion size.
Im going to have to ask when I get to work today and find out if this is a thing as im now baffled Grin
The fish counter do fillet the fish etc and the hot food counter have whole chickens but they are sold whole the hot portions you can buy come in ready cut and seasoned.
Im intrigued now op... also craving a chicken roast Grin

Betsy you made me laugh! Please do ask and let me know. I’m starting to wonder whether the in-laws did get it in Sainsbury’s now!!

I know that you can ask for a carcass at independent butchers so it didn’t occur to me that it would be odd to do so in Sainsbury’s!

After this thread Sainsburys is going to get a sudden surge in requests for chicken carcasses!! 🤣🤣

Downunderduchess · 23/06/2019 08:59

@VivienneHolt exactly

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/06/2019 09:24

But do they do Free Range chicken carcasses? (If they do them at all.)

Betsy86 · 23/06/2019 19:49

Hmmm none of the butchers at work knew about the 99p carcasses op! Are you sure your relatives didn't jus go crazy and eat the best part of a freshly cooked whole chicken in the car on the way home.... and bring you home the scraps lol Grin

mycatislickingherpaw · 24/06/2019 22:49

😬😬 that could be an option!
No, I am sure it came from there. As one pp said, it was on a polystyrene tray wrapped in cling film and a big red sticker saying 99p. They did it all there on the spot.
I suppose they asked and one was sorted for them with a random-ish price tag on.
I will ask again next time I go.

I've never been able to get any meat or fish butchered/filleted at Sainsbury's so am impressed yours does this!

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/06/2019 08:16

You can definitely get fish filleted at my local Sainsburys and they do have an on-site butchers.
