So I just got my shopping delivered just now, and I don't know what to do with this mince. It doesn't smell bad bad, but it's the colour that's putting me off even though it's got the date 25th June on it. WWYD?

I'd throw it away and complain to the supermarket for a refund.

FelicityBeedle · 22/06/2019 21:13

It’s just trying oxidised by the look of it, I’d eat it happily

CandyCaneLane0 · 22/06/2019 21:13

It'll be fine as long as it smells okay

GinisLife · 22/06/2019 21:13

It will be fine once it's cooked.

Mary1935 · 22/06/2019 21:14

Oh bin that but get a refund if possible. It’s definitely off.

Haworthia · 22/06/2019 21:14

I don’t mind a little bit of brown on mince, but the whole lot? Nope.

TowerRavenSeven · 22/06/2019 21:14

It might technically be safe to eat but will have that ‘tainted’ taste. I’d return it.

PetrichorRain · 22/06/2019 21:16

It’s not definitely off. I mean, it might be, but that’s just the colour mince is supposed to be. Bright red isn’t mince’s natural colour, it’s been oxidised.

msmith501 · 22/06/2019 21:17

We're mostly used to red show-quality meat which is freshly killed and bright red (and not at all tender without slow cooking). When you buy 28 day old Angus beef (for example) it's been hung, the lysosomes (destructive enzymes) in the cells of the meat help to break down its tough texture and you get tenderised meat nature's way....and it's brown and oxidised. Your meat will be fine and maybe slightly nicer than usual.

AyBeeCee10 · 22/06/2019 21:17

Looks disgusting. Only place is the bin for it.

mouldyhousemouldylife · 22/06/2019 21:18

Instead of wasting food listen to the people who are telling you it's fine. It hardly looks appetising when it's red either does it?

SpanglyPop · 22/06/2019 21:22

Fuck that. Looks like that poor cow died in WW2. No. Just no.

Paraballa · 22/06/2019 21:23

It's fine. When I ate meat I used to wait till mince went that colour before using it because it tastes nicer then.

Don't bin it!!

SmallPinkBear · 22/06/2019 21:26

It is fine. It is because they add gases to beef to make it look red, which isn’t natural. As long as it smells and is within date I would eat it

HappyPeopleDay · 22/06/2019 21:28

Bleugh.

TripleASays · 22/06/2019 21:30

I'd definitely bin it

HillRunner · 22/06/2019 21:31

I'd eat it provide it smells ok. That is just oxidized, totally normal.

(Btw... it would be interesting to know the average age of those saying it's ok and those saying bin it. I don't know at what point people became convinced that bright red meat is the only kind that's ok to eat, but I think it's relatively recent.)

Miljah · 22/06/2019 21:34

I agree, hillrunner. When did meat the colour of dead meat, a few hours post death, i. e. brownish become bleurgh?

Ronsters · 22/06/2019 21:37

The blood has oxidised and gone brown. If it's in date and smells ok, I'd cook and eat it.

Mummoomoocow · 22/06/2019 21:38

Bin it because if it’s oxidised it doesn’t just mean air has got to it, it means oxygen has got to the bacteria in the mince and it has started breeding. If this was steak then fine keep it because the bacteria cannot penetrate into the meat through the thick fibrous tissue but mince has been churned so all the bacteria is mixed through the meat. Don’t eat it.

CORSACORSA · 22/06/2019 21:51

🤢🤢🤢🤢

Frenchfancy · 22/06/2019 21:57

It's in date and doesn't smell. Meat doesn't naturally look pink when it is aged. It will be fine and probably taste better than the normal tasteless pink stuff.

I can't believe how many people would throw away perfectly good meat.

Goneoffmorrisons · 22/06/2019 21:58

It doesn't smell bad, but it doesn't have that 'fresh meat' smell either. I'll cook it and see if we can eat it.

recklessgran · 22/06/2019 22:00

No way on earth I'd eat that. Pic, complain, refund!

AragonsGirl · 22/06/2019 22:00

I opened a pack like this last week, sniffed it, or smelt fine, it was in date...so I used it. My dad was a butcher for 40+ years, and I’ve asked him about similar mince before. He told me you’d definitely know of it was off!
