Today I did the stupidest driving thing I've ever done - I pulled into a one way street the wrong way.

I had never been to this town before and was very flustered, and there was an arrow saying the car park was left - turned out it was the second left, not the first. The first left was a one way road.

I pulled into it and realised my mistake and panicked. A parking warden then came and said I needed to reverse out, which was on to a busy road. Other cars were hooting and it was very embarrassing.

I pulled over afterwards and cried. I am also scared I am going to get a fine and points on my licence for this - lots of people saw this happen and there are cameras everywhere these days. I alrady have dozens of things to worry about. What is the punishment likely to be? :(

I've driven in bus lanes

I've done this too - certain roads here suddenly turn into a bus lane and non-buses are filtered off into a side street. I mistakenly carried on, did a very quick u-turn and exited again. Didn't even get a ticket :)

My old workplace looked onto a busy on way street.

Someone fucked it up most days tbh. Don’t stress it.

I was leaving a supermarket car park a while back, for some reason I assumed it was a one way 'exit only' road with the left lane for turning left at the lights and the right lane for turning right.

I duly drove along the right hand lane and pulled up at the red lights... only to be met head on a couple of seconds later by a stream of cars attempting to turn into the car park off the main road!

The worst thing is it was a supermarket I've used plenty of times before so I don't know why I had that particular brain fart.

I have been driving for years and have done this twice in the past week. I was coming out of the library with my daughter and turned left. We usually walk there and I didn't realise it was one way. This morning in an unfamiliar Tesco I went down a one way the wrong way and didn't notice until I was parked up and walking to the store. I saw several other drivers doing the same thing.

Meggie2008 · 22/06/2019 18:02

I did this once, also in a town I had never been before. I panicked, managed to turn around and was mortified to ever encounter anyone from that town again.
We've all done it at some point probably!

TheDarkPassenger · 22/06/2019 18:44

Our schools on a one way and people mess it up daily! I wouldn’t worry too much but I did something similar in that the car in front of me seemed to notice an ambulance flying towards us and I didn’t and when I finally stopped he screamed at me and I cried for a very long time and didn’t dare drive home. It happens to us all when we shock ourselves (or at least me anyway! And I’m pretty easy going)

Goodenough06 · 22/06/2019 18:54

I did this really recently in my own hometown (so no excuses!!!) Shouting 'fuck fuck FUCK!' At the top of my lungs. Had to drive into the exit of a car park and turn around and pretend to just pull out normally, going the right way. Blush
Lorry driver looked at my like I was batshit...to be fair he had a point.
The worst that happened is that I had a very red face for the rest of the day.

If it makes you feel better "fanny the twat-nav" as I now call it sent me down a tram-line once...I was expecting a fine or worse but I think the look of sheer terror on my face was enough to convince the cctv operator that no way in hell would that ever happen again. I have not driven in that particular city since!!

SuzieQ10 · 22/06/2019 19:48

Don't worry nothing will happen.
The worst bit is over.
I've done it myself, when I had a tiny baby screaming the car down and I couldn't think straight.

You made a mistake, you felt awful about it, now close it down in your mind. You wond do it again - so don't think about it again. It's finished x

RogueV · 22/06/2019 19:50

Aah don’t worry about it!
I once drove onto tram tracks in Manchester and ended up on some lay by where there were no cars. It was so busy and everyone was pointing and staring! DH was nearby I asked him to meet me to move it Blush

ambereeree · 22/06/2019 20:55

I once did this on a dual carriage way in Central London. The sat nav said to turn left so I did...

Mousetolioness · 23/06/2019 08:02

You have nothing to worry about I'm sure. At a large junction (all dual carriageways and feeder lanes onto the intersection) I was turning right but misjudged the turn and found myself facing head on the two lanes of traffic waiting for their green light.
