To ask NDN to get a litter tray?

We have just done up our garden which has involved putting in a border for flowers/shrubs. It looks lovely out there now and I’m enjoying spending time in it. However next door have this cat who seems to have decided it’s where he’s going to shit and I’ve seen him loitering a few times now and had to pick up bits of poo on multiple occasions.

Yesterday I went out to peg some washing on the line and instantly observed that the garden stank. Really really vile. I sniffed my way to two giant piles of cat poo in the bed by the patio. We have a heap of compost behind the shed so I got a trowel out and chucked it behind there but I was gagging doing it it was so bad, and the poo was (sorry TMI) really wet and liquidy so it was just really unpleasant.

This morning the same thing happened as I went out to eat my breakfast on the patio and it put me off eating it for a while.

I’ve had cats before when I lived with my parents and always known them to dig holes and cover it up so this brazenly shitting and leaving it is strange behaviour to me.

I don’t want to spend every morning gagging picking up someone else’s cat shite though! Would it be unreasonable to go next door and tell them, and ask them to make a litter tray in the corner of their garden or something to try and train the cat to use theirs not mine? DH says I’ve got no chance but it is truly revolting!

I use sticks and chilli powder in newly planted pots to keep animals from damaging my garden. By animals - in order of annoyance - I mean foxes from crapping, digging and rolling every where, squirrels from digging everything up and cats pooing in the wrong areas.

In fact some of the neighbourhood cats I like because they chase the squirrels away.

How on earth do you tell a cat not to go next door

You cat proof your garden so your cat stays home?

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 22/06/2019 21:12

I chuck vegetable oil at them. Doesn't harm them in the slightest but take them ages to get it out of their fur and they don't usually come back. Never had the same cat more than twice.

thenightsky · 22/06/2019 21:38

thesnapandfartisinfallible That's one I've not heard before. How do you deliver the payload of oil though? Does it now clog up a super soaker?

MoreTeaPenguin · 22/06/2019 21:55

I had similar problems with next door's cat pooing in my veg beds and digging them up, it was minging. My mum recommended putting sprigs of holly over all the exposed soil, which was very effective, no more digging or poo!

TwoPupsAndaHamster · 22/06/2019 21:55

You need to focus on cat proofing your garden

The onus should be on the cat owner to cat proof their garden so it cannot get into neighbours gardens to crap.

Fucksandflowers · 22/06/2019 22:01

Yes it should but they've obviously aren't so it's now up to you.
And anyway, if the offending cats owner did cat proof, there is nothing to stop a different cat taking its place.
Just cat proof the garden then you don't need to worry

TwoPupsAndaHamster · 22/06/2019 22:31

I, personally, don't need to cat proof my garden. I have 2 dogs. It would be a stupid cat who ventures into my garden.

I feel very sorry for my neighbour the other side of cat owner. She bought the house because the garden is large and she has done it beautifully. One side for her to grow her flowers and vegetables, the other side for her young children to play.

The bloody cats ruin everything. Poor girl is at her wits end. The children can't play out the garden without stepping or falling in cat crap. She has a new baby, partner has left her and she can't afford to cat proof her garden because some inconsiderate neighbour keeps getting cats. Yes, cat owner thinks it's funny whenever somone mentions cat proofing her garden too.

It seems most cat owners think it's ok to get a pet, throw it out and don't give a toss when it upsets the neighbours. "Cats are free spirits. You can't keep them in". Seems to be the stock answer.

I'ts strange how some cat owners are able to contain their pets within their own property but others can't.

Fucksandflowers · 22/06/2019 22:37

Then perhaps your neighbour should do what I did with my raised planter and stick wooden skewer sticks in the soil varying heights so that cats won't enter if she can't afford to cat proof?

Or perhaps aviary wire, Poundland usually sells it?

You can't control other people so if cat owner is unwilling she has to take active steps.

Barbie222 · 22/06/2019 22:54

They've probably already got one, but the cat won't use it.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 23/06/2019 09:55

Jeyes fluid around where they shit. My dad swore by it.

CaptainButtock · 23/06/2019 10:51

Cotswoldmama Hmm So where do you think they shit now???!
OTHER PEOPLES GARDENS

The selfishness is astonishing.

hiccupgate · 23/06/2019 10:58

Was thinking about starting this thread myself because ndn cats shit on our paved front door step. They even shat directly on the lid of the gas box ffs. Great big liquid shits so I can't even pick them up with a bagged hand. Brilliant when I've got a pram to get in and out the house 😡

SerenDippitty · 23/06/2019 11:06

Not burying shit is the behaviour of a cat that is dominant in the local hierarchy. It’s leaving it so the smell can warn the other cats.

If the cat has never used a litter tray it is not going to do so now.Can see how unpleasant it must be. I have a.so heard that human wee especially male wee can put them off.

Herocomplex · 23/06/2019 11:08

Ah thanks Seren that’s interesting, so having so many cats next door is causing the behaviour, they’re territory marking.

PositiveVibez · 23/06/2019 11:27

Cats are supposed to not poo in their own gardens but ours does! I found some cat and dog repellent in Poundland and no more poo in our garden!

Oh my god. So you don't want your cats shit in your own garden, but quite happy for it to shit in anyone else's.

These threads never fail to bring out the fact that cat owners are in the main, extremely selfish people.

CaptainButtock · 23/06/2019 13:35

Astonishing. Really.

CaptainButtock · 23/06/2019 13:37

^What PositiveVibez said exactly^

themailfail · 23/06/2019 13:40

Sounds like a fox. I'm mid terrace and I get foxes in; a six foot fence is no trouble to them

AnthonyCrowley · 23/06/2019 13:42

My cat shits in my garden so it's all good. Even better is the fact that my dog eats it. I don't have to clean up cat poo, saves money on dog food. Still have to clean the dog poo up though!

JustMe9 · 23/06/2019 13:43

Get a dog to scare off the cat lol
