A new male contraceptive

This looked interesting- a gel for men as a new contraceptive...but sounds like a hassle and women can't touch their arms / chest etc?

AIBU to think this would be hard in practice?

It would be very hard in practice, but I am cheered up by the quote

'the overarching thing is that I feel it’s had very little impact on my life'

Looking hopeful to a female version of the gel.

It's a step in the right direction but really?? Men's chest and arms cannot be touched unless the female wants to grow a beard!?

That's ridiculous!

Imagine one night stands where the man says he's on contraceptive but neglects not to tell her not to touch him there!

Watda7014 · 22/06/2019 07:32

What?! You can’t touch his arms?? 😂 erm no thank you.....

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 22/06/2019 07:33

"Without adding testosterone back in, men get unpleasant side-effects such as low mood, weight gain and a slump in libido."

This line depressed me.

Isn't that completely the norm for the female pill too? I can't take any hormonal contraceptives because I get too depressed on them and don't want to have sex anyway. But when it's women, we should just suck it up, when it's men, it's a barrier.

BeanBag7 · 22/06/2019 07:34

YANBU what a ridiculous idea. Not a Male contraceptive, that's fine, but one which means you cant be touched on the arms or shoulders... how is that ever going to work?

user87382294757 · 22/06/2019 07:41

It does say if the man takes a shower in the evening or wears a T shirt it is OK (puts the gel on in the morning)

I'm not sure can see many men doing this consistently though as sounds like quite a hassle.

OK to touch them I mean

I was actually thinking this morning about male contraception and how it's long overdue, but yeah i can't see many men bothering applying it every morning, having to wash it off every night or wear a shirt in bed. Never mind about not touching that area during sex!

I am assuming that you have to use it on the long term for it to work and consistently? Yeah, I can't see that happening.

I wonder why it is not possible to use a patch for the hormones instead like women have for HRT. Mind you have a friend (female) and think they get testosterone via a gel also (?) so might be down to the type or hormones I guess. A patch or implant type thing would surely be a bit easier.

Waiting yes i think it says it needs to build up to get to stage of being affective.

You have to be careful with (female) HRT gels, to make sure the partner doesn’t get gel in their own skin.

I think if they could do this in a patch form it could be fantastic.

HJWT · 22/06/2019 07:50

although some participants encountered other problems including acne and depression.

This is about another male contraception they tried but it caused the above, funny that I get acne and put weight on when I use hormonal contraception but guess what..... I have no other option other than a baby Hmm

Why do men get new options when the first causes them problems 😂

Kpo58 · 22/06/2019 07:50

It sounds more like an April fools joke than reality. Cover yourself in gel and don't allow hugs or skin to skin contact from your partner or children as it's probably not a good thing for babies to touch. As if anyone would do this as long term, especially as they don't say if the gel will stain clothes or not.

Oops x post with op

user87382294757 · 22/06/2019 07:55

Yes might be a contraceptive in itself Wink

I wouldn’t trust a man to do it or any other pills etc. Sp I would always take my own anyway. I imagine I’m not the only woman who feels that way!

I’d trust Dh. But when I was younger, no way. I would have used my own contraception too.

I think it’s good for men to have more contraceptive options though.
