Firstly apologies it's not an AIBU but I couldn't find the general chat topic so posting for traffic...my mums friend is starting chemo next week and I've grown up knowing her, she's a wonderful woman and I'd like to send her something thoughtful/useful along the lines of done books to read while having her chemo etc. Any suggestions of presents? Thanks

Subscription to a magazine? Probably better than a book that she might not be able to concentrate on.

Fairenuff · 21/06/2019 22:57

I bought my sister a kindle and gave her my Netflix password. She said it was invaluable during her chemo and the time just flew by.

Oneminuteandthenallgone · 21/06/2019 22:57

nothing.
My Dh starts the process next week. Heads down and get on with it- it doesn't define you etc

The bell ringing singing mantra doesnt suit everyone

So nice message - that is all

@beaveringaways there is an internet shop called Not Another Bunch Of Flowers that was set up especially for occasions like this.

They sell lovely things.

I dont work there ( but im a nurse which is how i ended up looking on it ).

I got my friend a very long phone charger cable (plugs are always too far away in hospital for normal length cables!) , burst bees lip balms (friends who have had treatment told me they got chapped lips) a bar of chocolate, a Costa voucher (there's a costa at the hospital where she had her treatment) and a warm big scarf/shawl. She appreciated the thoughtfulness (well that's what she told me.. but I guess she wasn't going to say she hated it! )

elasticfantastic · 21/06/2019 23:38

Burts bees.. bloody autocorrect

FaithInfinity · 21/06/2019 23:41

Soft pashmina? Many people feel the cold when they’re getting chemo, especially if they are having the cold cap to try and keep their hair.

I think what you’re thinking of doing is lovely btw Smile

TheSandgroper · 21/06/2019 23:44

Chocolate covered prunes might be very useful.

Strunderthuck · 22/06/2019 00:03

I bought my mum's friend a v-shaped pillow when she was going through surgery and chemo for breast cancer - she said it was one of the best gifts she received during that time, as she could get comfortable more easily.

Chanteuse · 22/06/2019 00:08

My mum is going through it at the moment and I have made her a hamper of lots of nice things to help e.g. moisturiser, fluffy socks, puzzle books, etc.

It is really thoughtful of you

FoldyRoll · 22/06/2019 00:59

It would be worth asking what type of chemo she's having and likely side effects as they're all so different some gifts won't be relevant. First regime I was on the drip took 5 minutes and had to go in the back of my hand, so no time for books etc, but couldn't move the hand anyway. Second regime was all tablets so no hanging about at hospital at all.
One friend got me an Audible subscription for when I didn't feel up to reading, which was particularly thoughtful.

BitOfFun · 22/06/2019 01:04

Boiled sweets and a really nice lip balm. Dry mouth is a constant annoyance.

beaveringaways · 22/06/2019 09:42

These are all brilliant thank you, I'm not sure on the type and probably not in a position to ask so might go for skin care and lip balm so she can use it even if it's a quicker process. Thanks @IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls I'll have a look that website sounds great x

Love the audible idea and V shaped pillow

With skin care approach carefully as the skin gets very sensitive and any strong smells make them puke Sad so whilst my mate liked demalogica you
Never know
