Clothes for wedding

So, my niece gets married in august, in this country. I'm nearly 70, a classic apple shape. I have decent legs (short, five and a bit) with slim lower arms but usual "bingo" upper arms for a person my age.

I normally live in leggings and tunics (silk ones when I'm going "posh") though sometimes do jeans and floating tops. In winter, I tend to do cashmere dresses, opaque tights and ankle boots.

Im in the fortunate position where I can flash the cash a bit for lovely niece wedding.

Problem is, I've no idea what to even look for let alone buy. Sis (mother of the bride) already has an outfit (which is lovely and appropriate). I have no wish to overshadow her, but I would really like to look good,

I just don't know how! I'm size 16.

Any ideas really really welcome

Could you go shopping with your sister?

Phase 8 has some nice bits. I would be tempted to buy seperates so you can wear them again in a more casual way.

why not visit some clothes shops and ask the shop assistants to help you (tell them you need a outfit for wedding but aren't sure what to choose etc)..they will be able to give you some suggestions based on wat will suit you and father your body shape plus what will stay in your budget too..

Shops which sell wedding gowns often sell MOTB outfits. I know you're the auntie, not the mother, but they will be able to show you suitable outfits and give you advice.

I used the (free) personal shopper service at John Lewis. Spent a good hour and-a-half, and didn't spend any money as my top choice wasn't available in my size. I was shown lots of items that I wouldn't have considered, many of which looked great.

Yes, get a personal shopper! Selfridges are excellent, or John Lewis.

I was in a similar situation this morning. This afternoon I wandered into Apricot where it was quite quiet and a sales assistant asked if I needed any help. I told her that I did... and the event I needed an outfit for. Half an hour later walked out completely sorted and with recommendations on what shoes would look good. Might be worth trying something similar.

Why not browse Phase 8, Monsoon, John Lewis, Laura Ashley on line before you step out to the shops? Look at "occassion" dresses or "embellished" dresses. Something like this: uk.monsoon.co.uk/view/product/uk_catalog/mon_1,mon_1.2/6429390408

Enjoy!

My mother is a similar build. To my wedding she wore a shift dress ans a cropped jacket with 3/4 sleeve and a fabulous big stand up collar.

Didn't need a hat or much jewellery, the collar was dramatic without being showy, cut her in all the right places and covered up the bits she didn't like.
