To ask where i can buy really high welfare meat online

Tobythecat · 21/06/2019 18:42

I went to a few of my local butchers and when i mentioned that I was looking for high welfare meat one of them gave an 'oh ffs' look and was pretty vague about it. The other didnt seem that bothered and just pointed to a few items. I don't want to give them my money as they just dont seem very passionate about welfare etc.

Does anyone know of a place I can get high welfare meat online?

Swillington farm swillingtonorganicfarm.co.uk/ is local to us. We get their monthly meat box. No complaints!

theWarOnPeace · 21/06/2019 18:47

Riverford. Expensive though so I tend to get cheaper cuts or bigger pieces and divide and freeze. Very high welfare and organic

maxelly · 21/06/2019 18:49

I expect plenty of people will pile on here and say there's no such thing, eating meat is never ethical etc....

I am mainly veggie myself but buy meat for the family and use riverford and also sometimes field and flower...

Tinyteatime · 21/06/2019 18:52

I’ve only ever ordered bone broth from here but I thought their ethos And ethics looked good and all the packaging was recyclable.

Able and Cole do delivery, not just a veg box company any more. It is pricy, but then so is higher welfare meat in general. I buy organic/free range when I see it marked down in the supermarket and freeze straight away. It gets turned into meals later.

This is one source for Label Rouge and Poulet de Bresse chickens although, of course, they are expensive:-

French poultry

and another company that I use regularly is one called Primal Meats, very impressed with them:-

Higher Hacknell is our favourite https://www.higherhacknell.co.uk/cat/organic-beef

Field and flower
They are really good.

BarrenFieldofFucks · 21/06/2019 19:08

Farmers choice free range used to be pretty good

nickymanchester · 21/06/2019 19:09

Sorry, I forgot to say that one of the big reasons I went for Primal Meats is that they are part of the "Pasture for Life" organisation.

So all animals are on pasture for their whole lives. A lot of meat that is marketed as "grass fed" actually comes from animals that only spend a part of their lives on pasture.

Tobythecat · 21/06/2019 19:09

Excellent! Thanks everyone- will have to try to narrow down all the choices!

Farmison is fab, got recommended to me by a devoted vegan who has experience in high level animal welfare. Only place she'd buy meat for her family. I get discount emails all the time so sign up and see what you get

Heartier.com ?

Hopefully that should take you to the info the Rare Breeds Survival Trust have about people producing meat for sale, not exactly what you asked for but these people are highly likely to be small scale and high welfare, the vast majority would let you visit if you were near enough too. They will be supporting rare breed conservation by rearing any animals that don't meet breed standards for meat as that helps pay the food bills for their breeding stock. They should all be registered with trading standards/environmental health as food producers if they're on here too but you'd have to double check that once you've chosen someone to use.

Does anyone know about venison? I tend to think of it as wild & thus should be good? But I keep finding out about things that aren’t as I thought.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/06/2019 22:51

I use Abel and Cole and they're pretty good.

FreeButtonBee · 21/06/2019 22:55

The ginger pig is fabulous.

wheresmyliveship · 21/06/2019 22:57

Seconding field and flower. Especially love the emails about Stu the poultry farmer.

Could not recommend them more (sometimes worried MNHQ will ban me for being an advert)

diplodoco · 21/06/2019 23:52

Happy beef or the horned beef company are great although that's just beef.

Whatdoyouknowwhenyouknownowt · 22/06/2019 00:11

I've been on a bit of a mission, as my mutts eat higher welfare dogfood, so they eat better than us. So good to see more suggestions.

Been following High Farndale on Instagram, hopefully, will get round to ordering a half-pig sometime.

www.graigfarm.co.uk/

Organic/free range. All the usual meat and poultry, plus venison and game and, depending on availability, goat. Excellent quality and service.
