To think this is expensive

Hello I currently have somebody regrouting between my patio slabs.
It's quite a large area and entails him getting down on his knees constantly and its quite time consuming maybe 2 to 3 days worth.
How much would you expect to pay.

That's very cheap. Most tradesmen charge £120-£150 a day. Not only do they have to pay tax, NI, insurance etc, that's also holiday pay, sick pay and rainy days pay (let's face it we have a lot of those).

bigdecisionstomake · 21/06/2019 09:08

I work in property OP and use a lot of tradespeople. £300 for 3 days labour is super cheap, even for 2 days labour it is at the cheaper end of what I would expect. Remember he will be self employed so having to pay his own Tax, NI, insurance, pension, travel costs, equipment costs and put a portion aside to allow for periods when he doesn't work e.g. holidays or if sick.

karala · 21/06/2019 09:10

I pay a handyman £140 per day which I think is very reasonable

Sallyseagull · 21/06/2019 09:14

Sounds very reasonable and cheap to me. You'd pay double that where I live.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/06/2019 09:25

Why do people accept quotes then moan it's too expensive. Labour is usually about £150 per day, so that price sounds spot on. A PP broke it down to £12/hour, would you want to do back breaking work for just £12/hour, I know I wouldn't.

pepperpot99 · 21/06/2019 09:34

Sounds very cheap OP. Think yourself lucky!

Yabbers · 21/06/2019 14:01

100 quid a day is 14 an hour. Not excessive at all. For context, on construction projects we are charged about 25/hr for a labourer.

How much would your time be worth?

LadyRannaldini · 21/06/2019 14:18

£300 for 2 days work is a bargain!

SpeckofStardust · 21/06/2019 14:22

It’s not expensive, it’s labor intensive manual work and it includes materials, frankly, I’d expect to pay a lot more for just the labour. Stop being so cheap.

Sally150 · 21/06/2019 14:30

It doesn't include materials I should have mentioned that sorry

OP posts:
BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 21/06/2019 15:39

You did mention that OP, it's still really cheap.

GiggleMcDimples · 21/06/2019 15:41

Yeah I wasn't expecting that to include materials. The £150 a day is labour only. The going rate in some places, ridiculously cheap in other places. Count yourself lucky you got a good deal.

SpeckofStardust · 21/06/2019 17:07

Sorry I missed it didn't include materials but just for labor alone as I said before it's still cheap.

CCquavers · 21/06/2019 17:11

This sounds cheap. Does that include materials? Don’t forget the the saying ‘you pay peanuts you get monkeys’. Cheapest quote is never best value for money.

19lottie82 · 21/06/2019 17:23

Remember they will be paying for income tax, pensions, insurance and replacement of equipment from that

LOL Grin

GiggleMcDimples · 21/06/2019 19:10

Not to mention, also in that price is a contingency to cover the costs from when arseholes don't pay their bill.

ControversialFerret · 21/06/2019 19:43

£100 per day for labour only is very cheap. If he's doing 8 hour days (11-7pm) then that's £12.50 per hour gross - out of which he pays tax, NI, pension, insurance, cost of running his van. Plus savings for holidays, rainy days and sickness. For a job which is heavy on the back and excruciating on the knees.

Still think it sounds cheap?

ControversialFerret · 21/06/2019 19:44

Still think it sounds expensive, is what I meant!

DramaRamaLlama · 21/06/2019 22:10

sally150 you seem quite determined that it's expensive!

IncrediblySadToo · 21/06/2019 22:15

It seems reasonable to me

You could have done it yourself but chose not to, what do you think it’s worth to have someone do it for you?
