Cost of concert tickets

DD is a huge Ariana Grande fan and is desparate to go to her concert. I've looked and tickets are in the region of £200 each,
for very average seats. She's under 15 so an adult would need to go too so that's £400 for a night out before we've considered transport, food & drink etc. We can't afford it. DD is sad, especially as one of her friends is going and bragging about it. She accepts it's a massive waste of money though.

AIBU to think that stars like Ariana shouldn't be charging such obscene amounts of money, especially given that her fan base is mostly young girls. I went to many concerts in my youth and know I didn't pay anything like the equivalent of £200 (1980s/90s)!

IIRC part of the reason concert tickets are so expensive is because few people buy music.

Houses prices and concert tickets are both nuts these days.

Flippedouthere · 21/06/2019 07:17

Ah yes "home taping is killing music" (frequently seen in the 80s) Grin

More like Spotify these days!

Where are you looking, is it resale sites? We are going to see her in August at the o2 & tickets were not £200 each

Flippedouthere · 21/06/2019 07:20

Ticketmaster - bit scared of resale sites. Found some £90 ones in October at O2 but really rubbish seats on a school night.

As PP said, people don’t pay for music these days, so the only way artists can make money is through live events.

nancy75 · 21/06/2019 07:22

Axs are selling the extra dates now (they are the official ticket people for the event) O2 is between £67 & £126 depending on seating. Not sure about prices for other locations

WingingWonder · 21/06/2019 07:24

No tickets have to be that much but you have to be ready to go at pint of launch. I think hers were 65 plus booking so still alit but also a lot less than 200
If she’s that mad keen as she gets older it might be her thing she saves for, it was always my paper round cash and so I earned every painful mile of it!!

nancy75 · 21/06/2019 07:25

If you do ever go via a resale sight use Twickets, they are a resale sight with a price cap & no high fees

CatsCatsCats11 · 21/06/2019 07:28

I think your looking at Ticketmaster platinum which is basically supply and demand and inflated prices. If you look at the normal ones it will be much cheaper. It's so naughty they do this now.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 21/06/2019 07:37

So some seats are £200 but actually you can go for less than £100 on a school night in worse seats? The choice is yours!

I doubt friend is bragging. I imagine she is very excited and wants to talk about it. How do you know what seats she has and how much her tickets were?

Singlebutmarried · 21/06/2019 07:51

Book direct through the venue

Birmingham Arena costs.....

You can book direct with O2 as well.

I don't think people are also aware of how expensive it is to put on a concert. Venue costs (usually a percentage of the ticket price), insurance, staffing, security, the band, the sound guys, the lighting guys, the roadies - before you get the named artist or artists. All have to be paid.

Iggly · 21/06/2019 07:53

I pay for Spotify. If you don’t I think there’s ads.

So there is money for artists. Plus they do sponsorship deals etc.

Let’s not pretend ariane grande is hard up and needs our money.

SimonJT · 21/06/2019 07:55

Shows cost huge amounts, many artists don’t break even with them, nevermind profit.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 21/06/2019 15:41

I'm taking DD to see Ariana at the 02 in August and I'm sure the tickets were about £80 each. We bought them for her for Christmas as they were released around about that time. Sadly I drew the short straw and it's me who has to take her.

The under 18 thing is very annoying though. I was going to concerts when I was 13/14. There's no way I'd have wanted to take my mum along to the gigs I went to in the 80's

isseywithcats · 21/06/2019 15:44

look to see if eventim has any tickets we pay on average £80 to £90 each for manchester arena for live gigs

MadSweeney · 21/06/2019 16:06

Check a site called Twickets and set up an alert. Tickets are sold by genuine fans and only ever at face value or less.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/06/2019 16:13

Yabu. Supply and demand.

notacooldad · 21/06/2019 16:14

When is the gig?
Often tickets are released and appear to have been sold out instantly. Often ( I'm not going to say always because I dont know) there is a second batch released.
I couldnt gettickets for Metallica at the Ethaid on first release but could get them up to the day if the concert.
You could try peer to peer selling sites that sell at face value.

I'm sure you are aware but if you do get a secondary ticket make sure it doesnt say ID must match the name in the ticket. A few people I know have been caught out at the stadium gigs over that.
