Log book thief

ZacAndMe · 21/06/2019 01:41

AIBU or over reacting to feel pissed off at the fact that OH has taken my car log book from all MY paperwork and then 'accidently' written in it, as he thought it was his log book (apparently both of our logbooks were together).

He sold his car so he needed to fill out then rip section on his log book and send to DVLA. However there are just too many discrepancies to his explainaton.

I was looking at family outing photos on his phone and noticed a pic of my log book, pic dated 24th may, alarm bells rang in my head, went to look for my log book in MY paperwork but couldn't find it look again and again. Then I just asked OH he went silent and said I don't know. I then said well you were last to see it as you've got pics on your phone. His reply was just utter denial and adamant he knows nothing. I got upset and left room he then comes downstairs an takes out my log book from his drawer and says it was with his log book and that he got them mixed up and ended up writing in wrong.

My log book was in a completely different place to his so him saying it was together is a lie. I found picture on his phone of my log book, why did he take a pic??

He has previous for lying , just lies about things, even petty things. He lies about his DoB AND even his name on official things.

Anyone shed light on why he would try to be dodgy and filling out my log book instead of his

I presume you’re looking for a response other than he’s selling/has sold your car, or possibly more likely has taken out a loan on it?

minisoksmakehardwork · 21/06/2019 03:37

Log book loan against your car instead of his would be my guess.

I wonder if he has requested a new log book and put the vehicle into his name. You can ask the DVLA for information it holds about your current vehicle for free. It would certainly flag up if a new log book had been issued in another persons name.

You don't have to have the new keeper slip to get a new log book but there is a £25 charge if you don't have that. If you do, it's free. Check your log book!

BetsyBigNose · 21/06/2019 03:39

Yup, Sorry @ZacAndMe; I'm afraid I agree with @Tigger365. It sounds very much like your 'D'H is planning to either sell your car without your knowledge (or maybe already has), or take out a loan against it. Have you done a credit report on yourself and your home address recently? I would be concerned that he's got debts secured on the house, in your name or has re-mortgaged without your say-so. I do hope I'm wrong though.

You need to sit down and ask him directly - what's his form like when being confronted? Is he likely to lie to you?

What's your financial situation like OP? Are you financially independent, is the house in joint names, do you have DC together? Do you have family and/or friends nearby who you could go and stay with if you needed to get away for a day or two?

Come back and let us know once you've done some digging OP, we'll do what we can over the internet to help or to support you.

steff13 · 21/06/2019 03:52

What is a log book? I'm in the US, we don't have that here. At least not in Ohio.

PawPawNoodle · 21/06/2019 03:59

@steff13 it's a pink slip, we call them log books here.

OP I would be checking with DVLA as PP have said. You don't need to use the drop-out bit to transfer title any more, you only need the ref number, so he may have done that online.

PawPawNoodle · 21/06/2019 03:59

*Rip-out not drop out

Ifeelinclined · 21/06/2019 04:12

Hi@steff13! We don't have them in my state either. I'm also confused!

www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/92483/v5c-log-book-rules-full-guide-for-car-buyers-and-sellers

It’s national documentation in the Uk from the Driver and vehicle licensing authority, the legal proof of who owns the vehicle.

He sounds like a criminal.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2019 04:53

To the Americans out there - it's your title document. What you use to secure a title loan.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2019 04:56

My suspicion is that he has debts that he is trying to repay with a loan on your car. Gambling? Online sites? Some habit he is feeding?

OP, you need to do some serious digging into your family finances and his.

PonderingPanda · 21/06/2019 05:04

OP - why are you with him still? He's a liar and can't be trusted. I couldn't be with someone who l was always questioning the validity of

MaybeitsMaybelline · 21/06/2019 05:29

He’s sold or selling your car or transferring ownership to himself so he can.

Jessbow · 21/06/2019 05:37

Has he borrowed your car and committed an offence in it, thought ''I know, we'll claim not town the car any more'' Then bottled out, perhaps done it online?

Check with DVLA who your car is reg to

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/06/2019 05:38

If he can’t be trusted, what are you going to do?

Doidoit19 · 21/06/2019 05:41

Agree with everyone else, unfortunately. Sounds like he’s probably used it for a loan. Are there any places local to you that do log book loans that you could contact? I’d also contact the DVLA to find out if the vehicle is still registered to you. I’m sorry but he doesn’t sound like the kind of man you can trust at all.

CatstorTroy · 21/06/2019 05:54

Just to clear up the log book isn't proof of ownership just who's responsible for taxing the car and where they send all the speeding tickets too!

CupoTeap · 21/06/2019 06:01

Hi op hoping you managed some sleep.

Have you ever heard of gaslighting? If not please take a look.

You need us to reassure you that you are being reasonable to doubt his story because of how he is.

Are they often things that if you mentioned to someone in rl they could easy dismiss it? But it's not just one or two things is it?

Llioed · 21/06/2019 06:06

Sorry OP, it doesn’t sound good. I think you will need to do some investigating yourself, seeing as your DH isn’t trustworthy and is unlikely to tell you the truth.

tempester28 · 21/06/2019 06:43

Yes sounds like an online logbook loan which is why he had a photo which he would have sent to the loan company.

StarJumpsandaHalf · 21/06/2019 08:53

Catstor you’re absolutely correct of course. I went to sleep thinking I’d put incorrect information and should’ve expanded on the difference between registered owner and registered keeper when in law there is no actual registered owner, just the registered keeper who has to insure, tax and if applicable MOT the vehicle.

Why would a finance company lend money against such a document though, especially when it’s not in the name of the applicant?

TheSerenDipitY · 22/06/2019 01:51

OP not come back?
did she do some research and discover hes got a loan on her car and is now quietly out the back digging a hole in her back yard to stick him in?
