Frightening message just left on my mobile phone answering machine

I missed a call this evening. A no caller ID number. I thought it was my daughter because she sometimes loses her phone ID. It wasn’t though, and when I listened to the message it was a female adult slowly singing Incy Wincy Spider in a mock baby voice, then after 1 step 2 step, a male voice said “you’re going to die”.

Is this a known prank that’s going round?

What should I do?

That's horrendous. I imagine it's one of these automated things, I've not heard them but seen them mentioned. Possibly on here.

TanMateix · 20/06/2019 23:44

That would freak me out. When you call the police just start saying you got a death threat, otherwise they will ignore you and ask you to call back if it happens again.

Do not worry about the kid in your DD’s class, it is unlikely it was him but if it was, much better to cut this in the bud than letting evolve into something worse. If he is happy to threaten you, he wouldn’t Mind threaten anyone in his class.

RosaWaiting · 20/06/2019 23:50

Oh terrifying
There was another thread about this....I don’t know what the result was but I would report it.

Sagradafamiliar · 20/06/2019 23:50

Oh, so it was automated then? I wouldn't worry about it in that case.

PregnantSea · 20/06/2019 23:50

This is a death threat. Absolutely call the police, it would be ridiculous not to.

However if it is that kid I wouldn't worry. They need to learn that you can't go around making death threats for a laugh. If they are then stupid enough to "take it out" on your DD then take it further still. Please don't teach her to give into bullying behaviour. Enough women have been taught that already, it needs to stop.

Jojowash · 20/06/2019 23:55

Oh god creepy

Kids have these horrible prank sites, they can put in your number and it rings with their chosen prank.

I would have freaked!

ChristmasFluff · 21/06/2019 00:03

I am not a panicker, but I would absolutely report this. Let the Police decide if it is a prank or not.

GabsAlot · 21/06/2019 00:09

Dont yu think he should be spoken to op rather than carry on and do it someone else

Artykitty666 · 21/06/2019 00:10

I would personally ignore because that's the kind of person I am. But you seem freaked out and I completely understand that so I would report it to police in your situation. If it is a pupil and they have to deal with the consequences, that's life. Lesson that death threats aren't OK. Pretty standard lesson I would have hoped they'd have grasped by this age. In terms of consequences for your own child, I'd raise your concerns with police and ask them how they plan to deal with that should it arise. We had pranks in s6 some of which involved criminal damage to parental property. Actually the teenagers took it incredibly well when they were faced with the reality of what damage was. Teenagers aren't all bullies. But obviously I've no idea about you and your child's situation.

WorraLiberty · 21/06/2019 00:12

What did Google say about it OP?

cheeseislife8 · 21/06/2019 00:15

That sounds super creepy. I'd report it, if it is some creepy weirdo the more reports they have the better.

StrangeLookingParasite · 21/06/2019 00:16

Well that would certainly give me the creeps. Horrible people.

Justaboy · 21/06/2019 00:22

Didn't we have this the other week and concluded it was someone pratting around?

Anyonefeelthesame · 21/06/2019 00:35

Thanks for all the messages.

I rang 101, reported what happened and have a reference number. They will call me back within 24 to 48 hours, and will investigate.

Will also phone my phone provider tomorrow to see if they can trace the number.

Thanks for the kind messages Flowers.

We googled the rhyme / prank and came up with nothing. Maybe it’s a new prank that is doing the rounds?

I had a call a few months ago. The content was different but it was equally sinister. I called and reported it to the police and they sent someone round within the hour. Nothing ever came of it thank God but it was very reassuring to know that the police were there and took it seriously.

Totur · 21/06/2019 01:50

There's an episode of Criminal Minds that reminds me of this! I'd be terrified!

Redglitter · 21/06/2019 02:11

Oh for heavens sake. It's not a death threat. There is absolutely NO WAY Police can or will investigate the source of a one off random call. They certainly wont be going to speak to the boy theres no evidence whatsoever it was him. Agreed it probably was but cant be confirmed

I despair of the things MN rush to report to 101.

bratzilla · 21/06/2019 02:13

I had a very similar call today on my works landline! She stayed silent for a while, after my 4th “hello?” there there was a very high pitched sound and a woman said “now you’ll die” then put the phone down.

MissLadyM · 21/06/2019 02:18

Of course you did....and just decided to add it to a thread at 3am 😂

bratzilla · 21/06/2019 02:28

MissLadyM yes it did actually, I’ve just finished work so first opportunity I’ve had to browse MN.

MissLadyM · 21/06/2019 02:30

Well how convenient, there should be plenty of advice here!

Kabia · 21/06/2019 02:34

My (then teenage) son once told how a friend of his used to dial random phone numbers (most were invalid), and when someone answered, they put on a fake foreign accent & pretended to be a take-away business delivering an order.
My guess is that my son and his friends have been at it again with a message taken from some obscure cheap horror movie, and you just got unlucky.

expat101 · 21/06/2019 02:44

Your service provider has the ability to see the full number and will supply it to the police.

We had a round of odd calls a couple of years ago, and knowing the rough times the calls came in, our service provider was able to connect most of them to the same telephone number. However, due to privacy laws, they were unable to disclose the full number to me but would to the police.

The calls stopped.

And as far as if its a ''friend'' of your Daughter's, all the more reason to nip it in the bud now.

bratzilla · 21/06/2019 02:46

I don’t need advice, I know it was a prank call.
