Mucus in baby poo

Hi All,

I started weaning my baby about 3 weeks ago and about a week ago she started getting more dirty nappies and mucus in her nappies.

I’ve been to the GP twice now and have also shown her photos of the nappies, and specifically asked her if it could be a sign of a dairy allergy (she’s EBF although I’m not dairy free). The GP said a dairy allergy wasn’t even a consideration.

I tried her on some baby porridge (contains milk powder) made up with some breast milk. Weaning seemed to go well so I introduced some puréed veg.

We then started getting more dirty nappies (from one every other day to about 4 a day).

The GP dismissed the idea of dairy allergy on both occasions as baby is well in herself (she’s actually happier and more animated since weaning), showing no other signs of discomfort, and quite happily allowed the doctor to poke and prod her tummy.

Her explanation was it could be a viral infection, teething or baby’s digestive system getting used to solids. I think I laboured the point of dairy allergy with her several times and she actively dismissed it each time.

The thing is when googling (i know!) pretty much the only thing that comes up is mucus is a sign of an allergy.

AIBU in still worrying about it being a dairy allergy because of google despite what the doctor has said?

With the absence of other symptoms it's hard to see why the gp would suggest dairy allergy. If baby is otherwise healthy and well it could just be breast milk - breast fed babies process their milk much more efficiently. It could be because baby has a cold, is teething.

On its own mucous poo generally isn't a concern.

Thank you for your response. Yes, that’s what the GP said too that mucus nappies on their own isn’t really a cause for concern.

Think I’ve got myself worked up. Thinking it might be my issue as a worrier instead maybe.

Hi there, I had similar when I started weaning - but subsequent blood in the nappies prompted a panicked dash to A&E - the doctors were all quite relaxed and thought it could be a viral infection, tests ruled out coeliacs etc - they mentioned that teething could cause the mucus. One dr told us that babies' tummies are simply very delicate & could be irritated by new foods etc. Not much help I'm sorry, but hope it puts your mind at rest.

@dazedandconfused28 thank you for your response.

Did it resolve itself then?

My boy has had mucusy nappies and diarrhoea. I took him to the gp and he said it was likely due to teething and swallowing all the extra dribble. Made sense as he had just cut a tooth with another coming. Try not to worry

Yep - totally sorted itself, no trouble now. Hopefully it'll be the same for you x

Thank you for all your responses.

Feeling more reassured! Also going to step away from google I think.
