Accepting temp role when unsuccessful for perm role

6 month contract coming to an end tomorrow. I applied for a perm role and didn't get it, feedback was I didn't convince them I wanted the job.

I'm very experienced with skills they are looking for (still) so was disappointed to find out yesterday I didn't get it.

They asked me if I'd stay on, I said no because the temp role was changing due to restructure and would be very junior.

Spoke to my agency to let them know I was finishing and they said the company has other roles, very similar, but in different teams and would I like to be considered.

Would I be unreasonable to say yes I would?

I feel maybe I am when my current manager asked me to stay and I said no too junior, only to move to another role that will be junior again but hoping more scope.

I'm not sure if I want a perm role at the moment but like the idea of having a good duration from the one company on my cv and I liked the company.

Yes I'd go for it - a different team and wider scope of role is good. Having more than i assignment at the same place is good too.

Always be interested in any opportunity. Working for a different manager might open doors

Hwory · 20/06/2019 07:04

I would go. Your not good enough for a permanent position but your good enough to do the job as a junior temp?

Fuck that.

mimibunz · 20/06/2019 07:08

It sounds like they made the right decision, as your last sentence says that you’re not sure if you want a permanent role. The hiring process is time consuming and expensive. Definitely accept other opportunities but try to be clear with yourself about what you really want.

LakieLady · 20/06/2019 07:11

Have you had feedback about why you didn't get the permanent role? It may be that there was another candidate who was outstanding, or that someone being redeployed took precedence. There may even have been someone prepared to do the job for shedloads less!

The fact they have offered you other roles shows that they want to keep you, they may just not feel that the present role isn't quite right for you, or vice versa.

Ask more questions and then decide.

CockerRootyRow · 20/06/2019 08:05

mimibunz yes I agree, I did think I wanted perm but I think it was the role on offer wasn't for me and the rapport with the HM during the interview was non existent.

I think another area will open up different opportunities so I'm going to speak with the hiring managers today and decide after that.

Has anyone else had this situation, how did it work out?

Personally I wouldn't take a step down to a more junior role. If you already have all the skills and experience needed to do the permanent role, stepping down to a more junior role could make it appear you don't have the skills iyswim.

CockerRootyRow · 20/06/2019 22:39

I had thought about that KatherineJaneway

I have now spoken with both of the hiring managers and said, truthfully, I want to embrace the chance to work in different areas while a temp in this well known company.

I think if I'm going to do this it's better in an recognisable branded company then moving from co to co trying it?

And it turns out one of the roles is paying more per hour than I'm on.

CockerRootyRow That is a good strategy if the brand is well known. It always looks good you've been asked to stay on after an initial contract ends especially at a well known brand. Also you might want a permanent role in one of these new areas. Good way of networking as well.
