Hairdresser left me with wet hair

Am I being unreasonable because I feel super bad? Each week I get two blowouts. Usually on a Tuesday and a Saturday. There is an awesome salon nearby who work mostly with walk ins, but you can make appointments. I never make an appointment because I don’t usually mind waiting.

I went in this evening, no appointment and two stylists were busy. That’s fine, there’s one person in front of me and one lady behind me. I am currently on anti biotics for a nasty chest infection and sinus infection.

A 3rd stylist arrived and asked me to go to a wash basin so he could wash my hair. He then directed me to take a seat until the lady was finished with the client next to me.

I sat waiting about 20 minutes, with my hair sogging wet. The man who washed my hair took the client he washed after me and was half way through her blow out.

The stylist next to me, upon finishing the blowout, started to painstakingly curl the clients hair with the ghd. I proceeded to wait but it was taking quite a while because the clients hair was very long and thick. It looked like it was going to take a while still. I roughly dried off my hair and approached the corner to pay, just for the wash. Two of the stylists approached me and asked me to sit down, I was really embarrassed I was caught on time and I was sick so I didn’t want to stay there longer with my hair wet. The man offered to leave his blowout to start mine and I felt so embarrassed because his client apparently had an appointment. I just said I didn’t want to make a scene, it’s okay, I’m just in a rush and could I pay for the wash.

The lady I regularly go to looked quite hurt (it’s her salon) and refused to take a payment.

I am thinking about it all evening, I didn’t want to cause a scene but I felt at the time
I was justified. Now I’m not so sure.

They shouldn't have washed your hair until they were ready to to your blow dry. You don't wash hair in a salon then get someone to sit and wait whilst you do someone else's hair!

GrumpyOHara · 19/06/2019 09:40

Wet hair doesn't cause illness or make it worse. I'd have just waited or asked how long they thought it would take, if I didn't have an appt.

I think you were being a bit dramatic to leave and I think it might have made things awkward unnecessarily

Meccacos · 19/06/2019 09:46

I once had an appointment with a salon and after washing my hair the hairdresser told me he didn’t have time to blow dry. I walked out of the salon with dripping wet hair. It was disgusting. He had time to do it but was fuffing around gossiping.

As I was leaving he yelled out “good luck finding a new job!” So it looked like I was unemployed and couldn’t afford the blowout.

That was my regular hairdresser and I never went back again.

Posted too soon.

But I don't think it's a big deal in the grand scheme of things and if you're unhappy with them you can just go elsewhere next time? It's not really anything to worry about

AlexaAmbidextra · 19/06/2019 10:10

How much does it cost you to have someone else blow dry your hair twice a week, have you added that up over the course of a year?

Just what is that to do with you or anyone but the OP? If she wants to get her hair done twice a week then it’s up to her. 🙄

LondonJax · 19/06/2019 10:15

I think the hairdresser was in the wrong to wash your hair, not knowing if someone was available to blow dry it.

But, if you normally go on a Saturday and a Tuesday why don't you make a running appointment? If you have to cancel or move the odd one because you don't feel well, they'll understand as long as you give them a day's notice. That way they'll be ready for you and you'll be in and out in a flash.

I'd have been freezing waiting around for 20 minutes with wet hair, especially in an air conditioned salon which most of them are these days. 20 mins is ages!

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/06/2019 10:23

Why is everyone being so rude to OP? She said she felt awkward about leaving and is now not sure she was justified in doing so.

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t have expected to sit for so long with wet hair in a place I went to regularly. I probably wouldn’t have left, but I would have been a bit annoyed.

AlansLeftMoob · 19/06/2019 10:29

If you were that sick you shouldn't have gone near a hairdressers imho and if you want to be seen on time make an appointment? They WERE wrong to leave you so long with wet hair, they shouldn't have washed it until they were ready to "blow it out" but people with appointments are priority.

1moremum · 19/06/2019 10:43

if you were sick, why did your hair matter? you should have been home tucked up in bed, not spreading your germs around and slowing your own recovery.

GabsAlot · 19/06/2019 10:44

They were wrong but why didnt you just say excuse me how long will you be ive waited 20 minutes and my hair is going frizzy

Goodlookingcreature · 19/06/2019 10:57

Because each stylist was with another client and I wasn’t going to interrupt another clients treatment, they shouldn’t feel rushed or interrupted. I’d have been quite happy to actually wait til they were ready, but dry.

I think you are getting a pretty hard time about the hair drying/booking an appointment, however, as you take methotrexate you should know the risks of people on immunosuppressant medications and whilst I agree that you can’t stay in when you are ill each time, a chest infection (as you would know) can be very nasty for people on immunosuppressants (more so than a common cold). I assume you were off your methotrexate to take the antibiotics. If I got your chest infection I would have had to come off my biologics (regardless of if they give me antibiotics) which would also mean I wouldn’t be able to walk until I was back on it

FilledSoda · 19/06/2019 12:17

I'm starting methotrexate soon, for RA.
I'm absolutely dreading hair loss.
You were right to leave , why should you sit there feeling uncomfortable and ignored ?
It must have made for a chilly journey home though .

Hecateh · 19/06/2019 12:42

I think you were quite right to leave and I also think the owner was right not to take your money.

If they do walk ins then a wait is acceptable but they should have some idea of how long things are going to take and should have been able to let you know that they probably weren't going to get to you for half an hour or more.

He shouldn't have been directed to washed your hair without giving you an idea of how long.
If the person after you had an appointment fair enough for her to be done first but if he had only washed her hair because she was late he should have done yours first.

Regardless
If you had been there for over half an hour with no one speaking to you except in the course of washing your hair then the salon is not very professional, however good the stylists.

RedPink · 19/06/2019 13:57

Because each stylist was with another client and I wasn’t going to interrupt another clients treatment, they shouldn’t feel rushed or interrupted.

It wouldn't have been rude to ask as long as you were polite. I think it was silly to just sit there saying nothing and getting annoyed. You should have given them a chance to rectify the problem.

I had an appointment for root color, gloss, and blow dry. My stylist was 10 minutes late because he’d gone out to buy a coffee for his very special client who comes for several hours and has many color processes. He then mixed up my Conor, but when he returned, he did her color. It was 25 minutes after my appointment time when he did my root color. Once the assistant washed my hair, I sat waiting with wet hair for 45 minutes while he cut the special client’s hair, did color on a third clients’s hair, then returned to the special client to style her hair. After 25 minutes of that time had passed, I let him know I couldn’t wait much longer, and would have to leave. He didn’t communicate with me, but said to the third client, ‘I once knew a woman who was so impatient…’. I was charged $240, $50 more than I was charged 2months ago for the same service.
