I've watched the series and Oprah thingy. I'm so shocked, how your life can be turned around over nothing.
I feel so much pain for Corey, Antron, Kevin, Raymond and Yusuf. Beaufiful acting and I'm literally in love with Ava Duvernay.
Does anyone know who that nice guard is? I can't find anything on Internet.
So my AIBU is have you watched it and how do you feel about it? How old are you? How much can you relate? I can't believe I've lived 34 years without knowing about the case and now I can't stop thinking about it

I've seen it, absolutely heartbreaking!!
I also had never heard about it until I saw it on Netflix.

It's concerning how much Trump had to say about the case back then & how his beliefs haven't changed.

Apparently the female victim doesn't believe the group should have been given a payout by New York as she doesn't believe they are all as innocent as they seem (she still believes there was more than one assailant) & said that she doesn't believe the police force were as brutal to them as they've said, because the police treated her so kindly....well in the 80's they would have treated a white female better than black teens...they still would now!!

Anarchyshake · 18/06/2019 20:04

Seen what? It's not clear to me from the thread title, and whatever it is hasn't been described for those of us who have no idea what this thing is. The most I can get is it's some TV program.

LeukaeLucky · 18/06/2019 20:08

@sheldonismyspiritanim I forgot to mention trump and his hideous campaign to reinstate death penalty. I'm a bit sad that the jogger hasn't looked into the case but she's a victim too so I can't blame her. She was fed that narrative and as she can't remember any of it, I suppose she has to buy it

@Anarchyshake sorry very poor punctuation "when they see us" is the title of the Netflix series about the central Park 5

A tragic, but powerful watch. Sadly not uncommon either.
I too had not heard of this case, but probably not worldwide news, New York was a dangerous place in the 70s and 80s, so a lot of violence went on (bit like London now)
The Oprah interview was so deep, so moving.

curlykaren · 18/06/2019 20:12

Oh, I tried watching the other day and couldn't get past episode one.

LeukaeLucky · 18/06/2019 20:12

@Lolly25 Antron made me so sad, and Corey looks so clearly disabled
I can't believe how they tricked him and the he ended up serving the longest sentence in jail

LeukaeLucky · 18/06/2019 20:13

@curlykaren too upsetting or boring?

nothingtowearever · 18/06/2019 22:08

I listened to this on a podcast called wrongful convictions about a year ago and was so so shocked it hasn't got more coverage so I'm really glad Netflix have done a series. It's absolutely barbaric what these poor lads went through!

FancyAPint · 18/06/2019 22:25

I tried but it was just too hard to watch, so frustrating, painful, like falling down a big black hole slowly. I skipped it and googled it and where they all are now/what they have done since.

sincethereis · 18/06/2019 22:29

I’ve heard so much about it but I can’t bring myself to watch it. I know it will make me angry and sad and just pissed off.

LeukaeLucky · 18/06/2019 22:44

It's hard to watch. The actors are so convincing and that includes felicity Hoffman that I only knew as Lynette Scavo. You just feel like kicking her ass.
The rhetoric used is outrageous (animals, wolves pack...) and you can see how their mindset influenced greatly their narrative.
It's quite insightful (re: racial prejudice, police brutality, the mob like attitude from the press) especially when you see that despite the tragedy those men turned out very decent human beings.

Finished this tonight and it's heartbreaking. Poor Korey's story in particular. I read some interviews with the jogger afterwards and really wish she would try to find some understanding that those boys were also victims and that there's not a shred of evidence that they were involved or that there was more than one attacker. However I blame the prosecution for that. She's clearly held on to that belief over the years and it's embedded in the trauma she experienced.

Anarchyshake · 18/06/2019 23:06

I don't know what the central park 5 is, but I'm getting a sort of gist now. I'll look it up on Netflix. Thanks for explaining. Sorry if I sounded rude.

RubberTreePlant · 18/06/2019 23:09

It's a very famous case. I'm surprised how many people weren't familiar with it, TBH.

LeukaeLucky · 18/06/2019 23:30

@RubberTreePlant tbf I was 4 in 1989 and even when they were exonerated I was fairly young. I'm glad I know about them now
@twattymctwatterson completely agree with you. Korey breaks my heart. Have you seen the Oprah show with them? It's very touching he's so kind-hearted
No worries @Anarchyshake I can see how it can be confusing. Have a go. It's a masterpiece IMHO

I've seen this. I'd heard about it and remember it happening. I think they are roughly the same age as me. I am actually watching it for the second time after watching the Oprah thing and the documentary. It's completely heartbreaking and terrifying. I can't seem to get out of my head how they must feel that the man who called for their execution as teenagers is now their president.

My heart broke for all of them but poor Antron still seems (understandably) filled with hatred and rage. And Korey, OMG. No words about Korey. What a hell he was in, they all were but more so him. Found it so heartbreaking when he said there was no Central Park 5 it was 4+1, so true.

Did anybody else feel quite angry with Yusefs mum? Understand that she had her sons interests at heart but she seemed to not care about the others. It's a very powerful piece of tv and I just can't stop thinking about it.

MsFanackerPants · 29/06/2019 09:49

As well as destroying the lives of the 5 young men who were falsely imprisoned, the fact that the real rapist was still free meant he attacked more women. A lengthy but excellent article on it (does contain some distressing details) www.thecut.com/2019/06/the-attackers-other-victims-in-the-central-park-five-case.html

clpsmum · 29/06/2019 09:59

@MsFanackerPants thanks for sharing off to have a read.

The fact that they wouldn't have been exonerated had the real rapist not confessed is shocking

Choca · 29/06/2019 10:11

I found it truly disturbing, the levels of coercion from NYPD and telling the boys to confess and then they could go home. It reminded me of the police interview with Brendan Dassey (Making a Murderer.)

They are an inspirational group, considering their young lives were ruined by what happened.

clpsmum · 29/06/2019 10:28

@Choca the part where the cop says "you need to put yourself in it or the jury won't believe you" 😱😱😱

clpsmum · 29/06/2019 10:29

@Choca totally agree with the comparison to Brendan dassey another shocking case, and he's still inside. Omg
