When kids correts adults

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 17:05

I went to legoland with my 2 dds and my dh. Dh is from Indonesia so our kids have a bit of darker skin and looks a bit Asian.
Dd1 wears glasses.
We were sitting in the observation tower going up, dd1 next to me, then dd2 and dh. The family next to us had a dd who asked her parents why dd1 had glasses. Her mom explained and then the dad piped in with "all gook eyed uses glasses" i was sooo furious but tried for dd1s one fault to find a way of telling him off withoug her noticing but to my surprise she literally turned around to him and said very factual "its called an Asian, saying gook eyed is mean and makes others sad"... I was so proud of her... And luckily the mom told him off later when we came out again. I could hear her when we walked past them..
But I'm super proud of my dd1 eventhough I'm sad that adults actually think its acceptable to say...

Thanks JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff for explaining better than I...

As the mum of a mixed (Caucasian/Asian) boy I salute your DD and you as a parent for teaching her to deal with this racist comment in such a mature, decent and classy matter. Well done.
That man was an absolute twat Angry

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 17:57

Thank you all for the kind comments. I can't take credits for dd1s smart comment to him. I was completely surprised when I heard her....

Are you in America?

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 17:59

Wtf? Are you in the U.K. OP? Good eyed is such a bizarrely comment I’ve never even heard anyone in the U.K. use it. Only American films!

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 17:59

MadamMMA no why do think that? Confused

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 18:01

I don’t know I think it was the insult and the use of the word kindergarten? I wasn’t aware insults like gook were used in the UK whereas the U.S has a bit more of an aggressive history/ legacy with SE Asia so I guess I can imagine someone saying it there?

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 18:01

Passthecherrycoke no do not live in the UK or in America. I live in Denmark but can't see why that is important. And just because you never heard the word does not mean others haven't... Hmm

MadamMMA · 18/06/2019 18:02

It was the word ‘Gook’ I’ve only ever heard it in American films and we don’t say Kindergarten either

Passthecherrycoke · 18/06/2019 18:02

I didn’t say it did, just surprised that’s all. It seemed very old fashioned and American. awful thing to say to someone

MadamMMA · 18/06/2019 18:03

Also it was just a question, nothing to take umbrage over

blackteasplease · 18/06/2019 18:04

In the situation you describe your dd was fabulous. Totally appropriate for her to do that and nice to see her confidence.

When kids correct adults grammar it's very cringey and parents have to explain that it's not on.

Bluerussian · 18/06/2019 18:07

Good for your daughter! She dealt with the situation with gravitas. The man was unbelievably rude and ignorant - must say, I've never before heard that expression though.

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 18:09

Sorry not English but used to live there so prefer this site to a Danish one. But do get some words wrongly sometimes

OP posts:
Bluerussian · 18/06/2019 18:11

I googled, 'Gook', and it is a derogatory term for people who are Asian. Not a word with which I am familiar I'm glad to say.

I don't know how 'kindergarten' came into this discussion but when I started school back in the dark ages, in England, I was in 'Lower Kindergarten', then progressed to 'Upper Kindergarten', so the word is used here (or was then),

MadamMMA · 18/06/2019 18:13

It wasn’t a criticism it was just a question, no apology required.

AhhhHereItGoes · 18/06/2019 18:14

Good on your daughter.

I think a child correcting an adult is fine as long as it's polite and factual.

I hope he felt ashamed of himself. Surprised he felt he could say that in earshot of another human to be honest!

RightOnTheEdge · 18/06/2019 18:17

There's no need to be arsey about the America question. I assumed America too.

I'm sorry this happened to your daughter. People like that shouldn't be allowed out in public. He was a rude, ignorant pig and your dd sounds brilliant.

cantfindname · 18/06/2019 18:34

What a great kid! She deserves to go far in life.

mbosnz · 18/06/2019 18:40

I don't think you sound as if you're being arsey OP. I do think that people don't realise just how much casual and overt racism people who are not white can experience.

I knew the term 'gook' because I grew up in an area where there was still some pretty strong feelings about the Japanese after WWII. I hasten to add I would never use the term and don't partake of those feelings.

SciFiScream · 18/06/2019 18:40

I live in Scotland and (thankfully) have never heard the term gook until I read this thread. Even though we have a vibrant Asian community.

The closest word that would be insulting I can remember from my childhood is "chinky" (though it was never used in a derogatory way it was the shorthand for Chinese food)

I'm pleased to say we all now say "shall we have a Chinese meal?"

I suspect that even though we used the word innocently enough it had a horrible background.

I'm sorry you have to experience this and well done to your DD.

Pleasebequietnow · 18/06/2019 18:49

I’ve never heard the word “gook”, but your DD was spot on.

Mxyzptlk · 18/06/2019 18:49

a bit odd that the child wasn't aware why people wear glasses.

Obv the child just wanted to say something, as they do, and that's what came out.

Well done to your DD for sorting that guy out. Glad to hear the mum was giving him an ear-bashing as well.

VladmirsPoutine · 18/06/2019 18:59

This isn't so much a kid correcting an adult as it is a kid defending herself against a racist. JFC! I just don't know what to think!

Luxplus · 18/06/2019 19:57

*RightOnTheEdge I wasn't trying to be arsey at all.
